President Biden Handed Over The Reins To President Trump On Monday (Jan. 20)
After serving as President for four years, President Biden welcomed President Trump back into the White House on Monday, January 20th prior to President Trump’s swearing-in ceremony.
The swearing-in ceremony made headlines, not only because Donald Trump officially became the 47th President of the United States, but because of the technical issues that Carrie Underwood faced. Her music would not play so she sang “America The Beautiful” a cappella, asking the audience to sing along with her.
When handing over the presidency, there are many traditions to uphold.
Since 1989, It Is Tradition That The Outgoing President Leaves The Incoming President A Letter On The Desk In The Oval Office
In 1989, President Ronald Reagan left a letter on the Oval Office desk for incoming President George H.W. Bush, creating a tradition that still lives on nearly 40 years later.
Bush followed suit and left a letter for President Clinton in 1993.
Clinton kept the tradition alive by leaving President George W. Bush a letter in 2001, and President Obama received a letter from President Bush in 2009.
President Obama left the first non-handwritten letter for President Trump a letter in 2017.
It is reported that President Trump did leave President Biden an outgoing letter, but it has not been released in the four years since it was written. Fox News has reported that Biden said it was a “very generous letter,” but no other details have been released.
President Trump Received A Letter From President Biden
President Biden was in a unique position, having the same person be his predecessor and successor seeing as Trump is only the second person in history to serve non-consecutive terms. The first and only other person to do so Was Grover Cleveland in the 1800s.
When sitting down as the resolute desk in the Oval Office, President Trump got right to work, signing 26 executive orders on Day One. He was so busy that he didn’t even look to see if Biden left him a letter.
As President Trump was signing executive orders, Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked Trump if Biden left him a letter.
“He may have,” Trump responded. “Don’t they leave it in the desk? I don’t know.”
Doocy then found the letter on the desk himself!
Trump thanked him, saying, “Thank you, Peter. It could have been years before we found this thing.”
He held up the envelope, which was labeled “47.”
Later, we found out the contents of the letter, which are as follows:
“Dear President Trump,
As I take leave of this sacred office I wish you and your family all the best in the next four years. The American people — and people around the world — look to this house for steadiness in the inevitable storms of history, and my prayer is that in the coming years will be a time of prosperity, peace, and grace for our nation. May God bless you and guide you as He has blessed and guided our beloved country since our founding.”
