Upcoming Movie Will Tell The Story Of Randy Travis’ Life And Career

Randy Travis is getting his own biopic. The country music legend announced the news on Wednesday (March 5).

Several country singers, including Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, and Patsy Cline, have been the subjects of successful biopics over the years. Now, Randy’s life story will be told through his own film, titled Forever and Ever, Amen, after his 1987 song of the same name.

Randy and his wife, Mary, shared the news with PEOPLE. Randy’s good friend and fellow country artist, Clay Walker, will star in the film as Randy in his later years. Other actors, not yet cast, will play Randy at different stages in his career.

“I’m so glad that this story is going to get told because it deserves to get told,” Walker said.

The biopic announcement comes 12 years after Randy suffered a major stroke. The stroke severely affected his ability to walk, talk, and sing.

However, over the past 12 years, Randy has been able to sing a few lines. He sang “Amazing Grace” in an emotional moment during his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

More recently, AI has given Randy the opportunity to release new music again. In the past few months, he’s released two new songs, “Where That Came From” and “Horses in Heaven.” The songs were created by having another singer record the lines, then using AI to overlay Randy’s voice from old recordings so he could “sing” the song himself.

Randy also just added over 30 new shows to his More Life Tour. The tour features James Dupré singing Randy’s songs with his original backing band, and Randy makes a special appearance.

When Is The Randy Travis Biopic Coming To Theaters?

Clay Walker approached filmmaker Andrew Hyatt with the idea to make a biopic about Randy’s life and career. Heavily inspired by Travis’ memoir, Hyatt wrote the screenplay and plans to direct the project. Clay, Randy, and Randy’s wife Mary, will serve as executive producers.

The film is aiming for a theatrical release in Spring 2026.

Mary says the movie won’t shy away from diving into some of Randy’s darker and more troublesome moments.

“He had bumps and bruises and rough spots. But Randy never, ever ran from those, and he never denied them. He accepted them. He learned from them. He moved on, and he used them as an inspiration for others.”

Clay agrees, saying:

“I look at Randy’s life, and I see redemption. This is a man who’s overcome all those challenges. He’s survived it all. Everybody knows that golden voice of his, but I think this movie is going to endear him to people in a whole new way.”

Clay, who has multiple sclerosis, says he can relate to many of Randy’s struggles in life. He hopes to bring that sense of authenticity to his portrayal of the man he admires so much.

“To me, this is largely not going to be acting because I’ve been through a lot of those hardships that Randy has been through,” he said. “I grew up rough. I’ve been through a divorce. I struggle with walking sometimes. I can put myself in Randy’s place. Randy doesn’t need sympathy, but I empathize with him…”

But Clay will not be singing in the movie. Randy’s vocals will be used in the performance scenes, “Nobody can come even close to getting that right. I can sing pretty good, but I’m no Randy Travis, that’s for sure,” Clay said.

With Clay and a solid team behind the project, Mary says, “This is what we prayed for — for somebody who would tell Randy’s life story just as he lived it.”

Stay tuned for any future news about the new Randy Travis biopic, Forever and Ever, Amen.
