Scotty McCreery Honors 9/11 With Heartfelt ‘American Idol’ Performance

Scotty McCreery was crowned the champion on Season 10 of American Idol in 2011. During his time on the singing competition, McCreery stayed true to his country roots, performing songs originally recorded by Elvis Presley, Garth Brooks, John Anderson, George Strait, John Michael Montgomery, Alan Jackson, and more.

One of his standout performances was during the Top 4 episode when the competition was narrowed down to him, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, and Hailey Reinhart. The first song he performed that evening was Jackson’s “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning).”
Scotty McCreery Paid Tribute To 9/11 Victims On American Idol
McCreery was just 17 when he performed “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning,” which Jackson wrote in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
The song asks listeners to remember where they were when the world suddenly changed. McCreery became visibly emotional during the verse about faith, hope and love, which added to the sincerity of the moment.
Judge Randy Jackson called it “the perfect song choice for where we are as a country,” and praised McCreery’s ability to make the song his own. Jennifer Lopez got choked up from the performance, saying, “I am just in love with you, I can’t help it,” explaining that she could tell how much the song meant to him.
She continued, explaining that he understood “what touches other people,” adding that this was “the mark of someone who was meant to do this.
Steven Tyler called his rendition “beautiful.”
McCreery’s rendition was especially poignant because of his unmistakably deep country voice and the sincerity he brought to the lyrics. Another reason the song was so powerful was because the performance took place on May 11, 2011, just nine days after the death of Osama Bin Laden.
Patriotic and heartfelt songs were a natural fit for McCreery throughout his time on the show.
Earlier in the competition, he performed John Michael Montgomery’s “Letters From Home,” a song centered on a soldier receiving letters from his family. He also delivered songs such as Josh Turner’s “Long Black Train,” showcasing the traditional country sound that helped make him a fan favorite and ultimately led him to victory.
