Singer Bonnie Tyler Dies “Unexpectedly” At Age 75

Bonnie Tyler, the legendary vocalist behind “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has died.
The news comes after Tyler suffered a medical emergency in Portugal in May. That emergency led to her undergoing intestinal surgery. She was placed into a medically induced coma following the operation to help aid her recovery.
Tyler awoke from her coma in mid-June. At the time, her family shared that she was still “very unwell” and remained in intensive care.
Sadly, the next statement from Bonnie Tyler’s family and team announced her passing.
That statement, which was posted to Tyler’s social media accounts early on Thursday morning (July 9th), said that she passed away “unexpectedly” the previous evening (July 8th).
“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in [the] hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement read.
The post concluded with a request for privacy and a promise of another statement to come. It read:
“We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

Celebrating Bonnie Tyler’s Life & Career – Who Was She?
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Neath, Wales, on June 8, 1951, Bonnie Tyler delivered her first public performance in a chapel as a child.
As Tyler detailed in her 2023 memoir, Straight to the Heart, she became inspired to pursue a singing career after coming in second place in a talent competition in 1969.
That singing career turned out to be more successful than Tyler likely ever dreamed. After performing for over half a century, Tyler earned three Grammy nominations and was awarded The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).
Tyler’s most iconic song was 1983’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” The track topped the charts in multiple countries, including the UK, the U.S., New Zealand, Norway, and Canada.
“Total Eclipse of the Heart” receives renewed attention whenever there is a major lunar or solar eclipse. For example, during the 2024 solar eclipse, the song reappeared at #1 on the iTunes sales chart.
Another one of Tyler’s timeless hits was 1984’s “Holding Out for a Hero.” The song was featured on the soundtrack for the movie Footloose, and was later used or covered in other projects, such as Shrek 2, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Euphoria, and the 2011 Footloose remake.
Just a few of Tyler’s many other memorable songs include “It’s a Heartache,” “Here She Comes,” “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man),” and “Lost in France.”
In 2013, Tyler switched up her typical musical style to make a country-inspired album, titled Rocks and Honey. That album featured a duet with Vince Gill, called “What You Need From Me.”
Tyler married property developer and former Olympian Robert Sullivan in 1973, and he survives. Speaking to The Guardian in 2012, Tyler said:
“I am still very much in love with him and he with me…Alas, we didn’t get to have our own family…We put it off and put it off until I was 39 and he was 41. I suddenly felt maternal then, so it just felt [like] the right time. I got pregnant very quickly but after two and a half months, I miscarried…We tried again but after two years nothing had happened so we just thought it wasn’t meant to be.”
As of that 2012 interview, Tyler had 5 godchildren, 16 nieces and nephews, and 12 great-nieces and nephews.
