Snake & Mice Fall From Kentucky High School’s Ceiling

Kentucky English teacher at Henry Clay High School in Lexington, Nathan Spalding said he was in his classroom when a snake fell from the ceiling and landed on his desk, taking his phone hostage.

“I certainly did not anticipate having a baby snake fall from the ceiling and cuddle my phone. This little guy gave me quite the surprise this morning,” Mr. Spalding wrote on Facebook.

Mr. Spalding posted a photograph of the snake wrapped around his phone and wrote on Facebook that a lady named Molly Haggerty Jones stepped in to assist and called someone to come help them.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife arrived on the scene to take the reptile off the property while at the same time identifying the animal as a rat snake.

“Our school is infested with roaches, spiders, and mice,” Mr. Spalding wrote on his social media post. He continued with saying, “Our school now seems to also have a nest of snakes living in the ceiling. Just another day living the dream.”

Mr. Spalding ended up speaking to the local news organization, The Lexington Herald-Leader, on Tuesday (Sept 20) and added that a mouse had fallen from the ceiling as well but it was in a different classroom, and the vermin landed on a student’s desk.

In addition to that, another teacher reported she had a total of three mice falling from her classroom ceiling this year, however, students were not present during those incidents.

Henry Clay High School’s principal released a statement in response to the snake and mice falling from the ceiling and said it’s not uncommon for rodents and pests to find their way into buildings as the weather gets colder.

“Each fall, our buildings and grounds maintenance teams work proactively to lay traps and spray repellent,” he said, according to FOX. “Additionally, last week, our building was evaluated and treated by professional exterminators as part of the district’s ongoing maintenance protocols. We will continue to take all steps necessary to ensure that Henry Clay High School is a welcoming place to learn — and work.”
