“Totally Insane” ‘American Idol’ Contestant Had Judges In Stitches, And You Will Be Too

It has taken 14 years, but we think Kellie Pickler has finally has some fierce competition for the title of Funniest Idol Contestant in the show’s history. During Monday night’s American Idol season premiere, 25-year-old Margie Mays made one of the most energetic and memorable entrances that the show has ever seen.

As soon as Mays took her place in the iconic audition circle, the judges couldn’t hold back their smiles. The Wilmington, Delaware, native was so ramped up from nerves that she couldn’t stand still and struggled to tell the judges her name.

“I’ve never seen anybody with so much energy,” Luke Bryan said. Katy Perry agreed and asked the singer, “How many cups of coffee did you drink today?” She then instructed Mays to never drink coffee again. But, regardless of how out of control Margie Mays was, we couldn’t help but fall in love with her infectious personality.

When she began to sing, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan seemed as surprised as we were by the incredible voice that came out of her mouth! With a high powered cover of “Shot” by Lawrence, Mays’s voice combined with her unmatched energy makes her an early frontrunner in our book! And, the judges agreed.

“You’re literally a star,” Katy Perry told Mays who couldn’t handle the compliment and had a minor breakdown, saying, “This day is too much for me. It’s crazy. It’s seriously what I’ve dreamed of my whole life.” She added, “What is happening to me?”

Perry then told the singer that she just needs to focus on winning when she’s singing and letting her “heart shine through”. She added that she needs to be herself when she’s not singing, something she has already done. “You already switched in between it. It goes from like totally insane to totally pro.”

Luke and Lionel agreed, and the trio voted to send Margie Mays through to Hollywood.

We can’t help but compare Mays’s incredible personality to that of Kellie Pickler who won the hearts of America with her southern charm and adorable sense of humor when she competed on American Idol in 2005. Both talented ladies have big voices to match their big personalities.
