Trump Pledges U.S. Support After Deadly Venezuela Earthquakes
on Jun 25, 2026 • Updated Jun 27, 2026

Yesterday, June 24, Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes, both only a minute apart.
With the epicenter in Northern Venezuela, which includes its capital city of Caracas, the first earthquake struck at 6:04 p.m. EST, registering as a 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
One minute later, at 6:05 p.m. EST, a second earthquake occurred, registering at a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale.
Now, as of Saturday, June 27, the death toll has risen to at least 1,430, according to Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez, as cited by The New York Times. Reported injuries have also risen to over 3,200.
Efforts to rescue missing persons who are believed to be trapped are ongoing, with over 170 people reportedly missing.
This comes after initial reports indicated that at least 164 people had died, with approximately 1,520 injured, according to CNN.
Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez noted that the initial number of deceased individuals did not account for some surrounding regions that were severely impacted, such as La Guaira, which was reportedly hit the worst.
The New York Times reports that 100 buildings were destroyed in La Guaira during the quakes.
Responding to the earthquakes, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social after his “America Is Back” kick off rally for the Great American State Fair, expressing the United States’ ability to assist Venezuela.
Notably, Trump wrote, “We will be there for our new and great friends.”
This comes just over six months after the U.S. conducted a military assault on Venezuela, arresting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Jan. 3.

Sec. of State Marco Rubio told reporters on Thursday, June 25, that the United States was “deploying search and rescue teams from Fairfax County, Virginia; and Los Angeles.”
