10 Songs You Didn’t Know Were Written By Morgan Wallen
on Apr 01, 2024
Morgan Wallen is a powerhouse in the country music industry. Last year, he was the top-winning artist at the Billboard Music Awards, had the highest-grossing tour of 2023, and had the most-streamed song of any genre. Most recently, he broke Garth Brooks’ record for the longest-running #1 country album in Billboard 200 history.
In addition to his success as a recording artist, Wallen is also a highly sought-after songwriter in Nashville. His last album, One Thing At A Time, included a whopping 36 tracks, and the album before that, Dangerous: The Double Album, was composed of 30 songs. With such an extensive music catalog, it is hard to believe that he still has the time to write songs for other artists.
Check out these 10 songs that were written by Morgan Wallen but released by other artists:
“Broadway Girls” recorded by Lil Durk
Morgan Wallen is a featured vocalist on this hip-hop track, but few know that he was actually the one who wrote it. “Broadway Girls” was inspired by a night out on Nashville’s famous Broadway strip and warns of the girls you might meet there.
“Brown Eyes Baby” recorded by Keith Urban
Keith Urban said he had a “visceral reaction” to this song and added, “Once I heard it a lot more, I realized it’s everything: it’s the lyric, it’s the melody, it’s the way the song is written. It just connected. It made a connection with me.” Urban did not know that “Brown Eyes Baby” was written by Morgan Wallen until after he decided to record it, since the demo was sung by co-writer Josh Thompson.
“Heartless” recorded by Diplo
Similar to “Broadway Girls,” Morgan Wallen is featured on this EDM track. It was a part of Diplo’s first country project Snake Oil where he collaborated with many different artists, creating songs with a mashup of trap, pop, country, and dance/electronic music.
“Like You Never Had It” recorded by Florida Georgia Line
“Like You Never Had It” was included on country duo Florida Georgia Line’s 2019 album Can’t Say I Ain’t Country. Frontman Tyler Hubbard described the song as “classic FGL” and added that it “just has good energy.”
“Party Song” recorded by Dustin Lynch
Recorded for Dustin Lynch’s 2017 album Current Mood, “Party Song” is a high-energy jam that is sure to get you on your feet and dancing.
“Preachin’ to the Choir” recorded by A Thousand Horses
“Preachin’ to the Choir” was the first outside song recorded by country-rock band A Thousand Horses. The band said the lyrics of the song, which celebrate the working man, “rang true to who we are in our upbringing.”
“Rockstars” recorded by Kane Brown
If you listen closely, you will hear several references to early-2000s rock bands and their songs within the lyrics of “Rockstars.” The tune evokes nostalgia from the era in which both Kane Brown and Morgan Wallen (as well as many of their listeners) were growing up.
“Wild as Her” recorded by Cory Kent
“Wild as Her” became the breakout single for newcomer Corey Kent. It was released in 2022 and quickly got the attention of country fans. Kent’s version of the song was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2023.
“Workin’ On It” recorded by Michael Ray
Morgan Wallen collaborated with a superstar team of Nashville songwriters for “Working on It,” which included HARDY, Jesse Frasure, and Josh Osborne. It was recorded by country artist Michael Ray who said this about the song: “It’s the idea that old cars need pieces, there’s always a project to do, but maybe the biggest project of all is … me.”
“You Make It Easy” recorded by Jason Aldean
Morgan Wallen partnered with Florida Georgia Line to write this Jason Aldean hit. “You Make It Easy” made it to the top of both the U.S. and Canadian country charts after its release in 2018.
