Season One of the Paramount+ show 1923 was filmed in Montana, with all of Spencer Dutton’s scenes filmed in Kenya, Malta, and South Africa. 1923 follows the Dutton family following World War I and stars Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as his wife, Cara Dutton.

Michelle Pfeiffer is rumored to be starring in a new "Yellowstone" spin-off show. Here, Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are pictured in a still from the prequel series "1923."

However, Season Two will be moving production from Montana to Texas.

The location of the show is such a huge character in the entire Yellowstone franchise, so we know the showrunners did not make this decision lightly.

1923 will now be filmed in Austin, Texas on ATX Film Studios’ lot. Season One was filmed at the Butte Civic Center sound stage in Montana, but lost it “due to delays from the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.”

Austin Business Journal reports that 1923‘s move is due to filming incentives in Texas. The state had recently approved $200 million for film incentives. J.P. Gallagher, chief executive of Butte-Silver Bow County confirmed these reports by telling the Montana Standard, “State tax incentive programs were a major factor for the production to move to Texas,” despite being in early talks with production about the show returning to Butte.

“The decision to film the Yellowstone series of ‘1923’ in Texas is disappointing,” Gallagher said. “Nevertheless, we respect the production team’s decision and acknowledge that these choices are influenced by factors beyond our control.”

Like Texas, Montana was trying to increase their film credit budget, but it was voted down at the most recent election despite Sheridan’s works making the state millions in revenue.

In 2021, Fear the Walking Dead vacated ATX Film Studios, leaving space available for a new show to take its place. Being a Texan himself and owning the 6666 Ranch in the Lone Star State, Sheridan was drawn to the new Texas location and the filming incentives were just the cherry on top.

Sheridan moving 1923 filming to Texas has been a longtime goal of Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who said on February 15, 2023, that he’d like to have all of Sheridan’s productions filmed in his state. Sheridan is already filming a new project, Landman, in the Fort Worth area.

Yellowstone is still being filmed in Montana, as Cole Hauser just shared a stunning photo back on the set in The Treasure State, writing, “Good morning #montana I’ve missed ya old friend! If you are going to rise, you might as well shine.”
