American Idol Announces Its Judges For Season 22, Which Will Premiere In 2024
The 21st season on American Idol ended in May with Iam Tongi’s big win. But before that, Idol announced its renewal for Season 22 (its seventh season on ABC).
Idol shared the good news on May 16. They said, “Get ready to sing along with us for another season!”

Deadline reported Idol “has provided consistently strong ratings for ABC since the network picked it up in 2018.” So it made perfect sense for the network to renew the show for another season!
At the time Idol made this announcement, no one knew if judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie were returning. Though Bryan told ET he’d be “running through the door, first thing” if Idol asked him to come back.
He also told Taste of Country:
“My future with Idol [will continue] as long as the show is growing and popping, and we feel like we’re doing beautiful work as a show.”

Bryan offered some insight into Richie and Perry’s mindsets too:
“As long as the vibe feels like we’re moving onward and upward — and we’re getting emotionally moved, we’re telling the stories of kids and the American spirit, and it’s a show that kids [and] parents can cry and laugh together and have fun [watching] — it’s gonna be a tough show for me and Lionel and Katy to walk away from.”

The new season will premiere in early 2024. An exact premiere date remains unknown at the time of this writing.
