In March 2016, Trisha Yearwood starred as Jesus’ mother Mary in Fox‘s live musical special called The Passion. The special told the emotional story of the last hours of Jesus’ life in a contemporary setting with contemporary songs.
In one scene, Yearwood followed a procession that carried a glowing cross through the streets of New Orleans. That’s when Yearwood stepped up for her most emotional performance of the night.
In that moment, Yearwood sang Lifehouse’s “Broken.”
Yearwood stood at the foot of the cross, rested her hand on top of it, and started singing softly. Some of people watching were overcome with emotion right away, and started crying. Yearwood also teared up as she moved through the opening lines of the song.
But by the time she got closer to the end, she couldn’t control her tears any longer. Her emotions were obvious as she sang, “I’m holdin’ on.” The camera moved through the audience, showing how many people were touched by Yearwood’s performance.
The morning after The Passion aired, Yearwood shared a post on her Facebook page expressing her feelings about her role in the special:
“I woke up this morning feeling so blessed and grateful,” she said. “Thank you for your well wishes and prayers. I felt your strength last night. God bless you all and thank you to The Passion Live for renewing my spirit and strengthening my faith.”
Yearwood’s performance in The Passion received an overwhelming amount of praise. Now, people revisit her performance of “Broken” every Good Friday and Easter.
