Just days before she was set to dance her debut routine as a contestant on Season 28 of Dancing with the Stars,  Christie Brinkley broke her wrist during rehearsal. She had to have surgery, and was no longer able to compete on the show.

So at the last minute, Christie called on her 21-year-old daughter, Sailor Brinkley-Cook, to dance in her place.

Sailor Thank you for taking a very disappointing turn of events into something very special!” Christie wrote when she announced the news.

With just a few days to rehearse, Sailor hit the dance floor and performed a routine to “Uptown Girl” while her mom watched in the audience. The performance was a special thing for Christie to witness, since she appeared in the “Uptown Girl” music video and was married to Billy Joel for a while. The pair are still close friends today.

After watching Sailor dance to “Uptown Girl,” Christie came out on stage to praise her. She expressed that she was extremely “proud” of Sailor for stepping up to the plate and dancing on such short notice.

Sailor has now made it through three weeks of the competition. With a total combined score of 59 points, she and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy are currently in fifth place where the judges’ standings are concerned.

During an interview with Fox News, Sailor said she is determined to win the show this season. If she does, she hopes she can serve as a mentor to her mom, who desperately wants to return after her injury heals.

When asked if Christie would come back for a future DWTS season, Sailor gave a clear answer. “She wants to come back immediately. She loves this,” she said of her mother.

Sailor said that her mom was “devastated” when she broke her wrist, and that she called her crying:

And she was saying, ‘I broke my arm and I’m, and I’m so p—– and I’m so disappointed in myself and I let everyone down.’ She wasn’t even worried about her arm. She was just like, ‘I wanted to do this so badly and now I can’t do it and I don’t know what to do.'”

But things worked out, and Sailor is now making her mom proud by dancing in her place. She admitted that she had never been a performance person, but is starting to get the hang of dancing and is learning to love it.

We’re sure the DWTS team would love to have Christie back for a future season. Then Sailor can cheer her on from the audience!
