Cody Johnson Gives Impassioned Remarks On The Sacrifice Of The Troops Before Singing “God Bless America”
While much of the nation is divided, and political violence is on the rise, it’s important to reflect on how American freedom has been and continues to be secured.
During Cody Johnson‘s performance on the Mane Stage of Stagecoach, on April 24, the country artist whose cover of “Travelin’ Soldier” once went viral — accruing 66 million views on YouTube — took a moment to celebrate the troops.
His message also celebrated how America allows for differences between people to not divide them.
“It is OK to disagree with someone in this country about anything — politics, religion, all that stuff, right? —and still love them anyway,” stated Cody. “So, do you know why it’s OK, perfectly acceptable, to disagree with your fellow man in the United States of America, and love them anyway? Because before we were born, an American soldier laid their life down for us to have the right to disagree and still be free and love each other anyway in the United States of America.”
Notably, Cody’s performance, and these comments, were given just one day before a gunman entered the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., on April 25, where President Donald Trump was about to deliver remarks at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.
There, a Secret Service agent took a bullet, surviving thanks to his bulletproof vest; and the alleged gunman, 31-year-old Cole Allen, was apprehended.
Similar to Cody’s comments at Stagecoach, President Trump said at the press conference after the shooting at the Correspondents’ Dinner:
“In light of this evening’s events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully. We have to resolve our differences — I will say, you had Republicans, Democrats, Independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives … there was a tremendous amount of love and coming together.”
