On Friday, June 5, Paramount+ dropped Episode 5 of Dutton Ranch, titled “Peaceful Find Peace.”

The Yellowstone spin-off centered around Rip and Beth premiered on May 15th to great fanfare.

Episode 4 found Beth and Rip is the most heartbreaking position where they had to kill their entire herd, as they were all infected with Foot and Mouth Disease. They surmised that the new bull they purchased at an auction was infected and the cattle broker “f*cked” them, as Beth said.

They dealt with the cattle broker the only way they knew how, to arrive at his home in the middle of the night, scare him off, and blow up his trailer.

To get caught up, read our recaps for Episodes 1 and 2, Episode 3, and Episode 4.

Dutton Ranch Episode 5: “Peaceful Find Peace”

The next morning, the sun rises on the Dutton Ranch, and Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) are contemplating their options.

The veterinarian they befriended (Ed Harris), brings Rip to the Jackson estate to meet with Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) so she could hire him as a foreman, seeing as her son, Rob-Will, is on an indefinite vacation (rehab), and her interim foreman Chet (Hart Denton) is a “f*cking idiot,” according to Everett.

Beth offered to look for a job, so he didn’t have to foreman another person’s ranch, but that would mean she would have to be in a bigger city like Dallas or New York. Rip declined her offer so they could stay under one roof.

We will break down the rest of the episode by character.

Rip

Rip arrives at the 10 Petal bunkhouse, and Chet recognizes Rip from their encounter with Rob-Will in Episode 1. Chet takes issue with Rip taking over his job and basically throws a fit while they are trying to wean calves. While the cowboys are watering their horses, Chet and ranch hand Austin (Sterlin English) get into another altercation because Austin is searching for answers about Wes’ whereabouts for his widow Whitney.

After the day is done, Rip asks Austin who Wes is and how long he’s been missing. You can tell he is putting two and two together, realizing the body he found on his land is probably Wes.

Viewers know that Chet saw Rob-Will kill Wes in the premiere episode and buried him on Dutton Ranch land. Rip found his body and disposed of it at his new “train station.”

Beulah invites Rip for dinner, where the two discuss his salary. Beulah offers him $9,000 a month plus a truck and a house. While he doesn’t need the latter, he counters with $11,000, which she agrees to.

Carter

Shortly after Rip leaves for his new job, Carter also leaves for his.

Carter brings Oreana to his new job to meet the leopard on his boss Dwight’s property. Since she had her car taken away, she is accompanied by Beulah’s right hand, who makes her go home once they open beers.

Carter and Dwight’s “party” was suddenly crashed by the Sheriff and the elder took off running towards his leopard. Carter ran towards him, not listening to the officers and saw the Sheriff shoot and kill Dwight, which was quite shocking, as he seemed like he was harmless.

Sheriff Wade told his partner that Dwight had a knife and almost killed him, making the shooting sound like self defense, but Carter noticed that Dwight’s knife was still in its holster on his belt.

At the station, Carter and the Sheriff strike a deal: Beth and Rip won’t ever find out about the situation, and Carter will never speak about what he saw. While walking to his truck, Oreana arrives and he cries into her arms.

It’s clear that Beulah’s right hand was the one to call the Sheriff.

Beth

Dutton Ranch cowboy Zachariah Moss (Marc Menchaca) offers to do anything Beth needs around the ranch because no work is beneath him. She says that she thinks her father would have liked him.

They share a cigarette where they talk about the peaceful nights that he missed while in prison for 15 years.

Prior to their interaction, we see that Beth is research exotic game hunting, beef prices, the Texas drought in 2010, and more. Viewers learn later that all this research is actually about the 10 Petal Ranch, which was turned into a game lodge following the 2007 crisis.

Everett arrives at Dutton Ranch with Beth’s horse that they saved from the accident in Episode 1. Everett said, “I thought you could use a pick me up.”

Everett and Beth walk her horse to the pasture and Beth reveals she doesn’t love that Rip now has to work for another Ranch. After devoting his life to her father’s ranch, this ranch was supposed to be his.

Beth goes to Beulah’s house for a drink, where Beth reveals that her herd is gone due to FMD, and reveals all the research she has done on the 10 Petal. Like the Yellowstone, the 10 Petal is hanging on by dear life and Beulah just wants to preserve it.

Beth has ideas that will take the ranch to the next level and offers her services to Beulah for 20% of the profits when they sell beef.

Joaquin

Chet confronts Joaquin for replacing him as foreman despite him knowing their most recent family secrets about Rob-Will and Wes. Joaquin reminds him that Chet had the gun that was used to kill Wes, so his prints are all over the weapon and that there are two ways to leave a ranch: alive or dead.

Joaquin sees Beth leave his mother’s house and confronts Beulah for inviting strangers into their business.

“Rip and Beth have secrets. I’ve learned that people with secrets can be useful. Corruptible even,” Beulah tells Joaquin while revealing that Beth works for the 10 Petal now.

At a motel, Chet and his lady friend are doing drugs when Rob-Will knocks on the door and reveals he’s returned from rehab. All we know about Rob-Will is that trouble and chaos follow him, and we can’t wait for him to find out that Rip took his job.

The episode wraps up with Beth and Rip reuniting at Dutton Ranch after a long day.

When Beth returns home from striking that deal with Beulah, Rip is waiting for her. Beth tells him she is working on “the plan” and to give her a week and she will know everything about the family and their business.

This is when Rip reveals to his wife about the dead body, so they need to proceed with caution. Beth asks him why he didn’t tell her. He said, “Peace, I guess.”

“Peace will have to wait,” Beth responds.

CHILLS! Oh, it’s ON. Beulah, count your days, Beth and Rip are coming for you.

The trailer for the rest of the season looks intense, with Rip confronting Joaquin about the dead body, Rob-Will’s surprise return home, and more. Tune in next Friday (June 12) for Episode 6.
