Dutton Ranch is one of the newest installments in the ever-expanding Yellowstone universe.

The show, which premiered on Paramount+ on May 15, 2026, featured nine episodes in its first season. The series was a smash success, with its two-episode premiere attracting 12.9 million viewers within seven days of its release.

Everything Started With Yellowstone

Even if you’ve never heard of Dutton Ranch, you have to be familiar with Yellowstone.

Yellowstone premiered on the Paramount Network on June 20, 2018. The series focused on the Dutton family, led by patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner).

The Duttons owned the Yellowstone ranch in Montana, and found themselves in a never-ending battle to defend their land…and themselves. But some of their worst enemies were each other, with their interpersonal conflicts driving just as much drama.

Yellowstone was one of the most popular scripted shows on television during its six-year run. The series concluded on December 15, 2024, leaving the door open for spin-offs like Dutton Ranch to pick up where it left off.

Who Is Taylor Sheridan? Meet The Man Behind The Yellowstone Universe

Fans of Yellowstone and its associated series have surely heard Taylor Sheridan‘s name tossed around before. He created Yellowstone with John Linson and has since had a hand in shaping all of the other shows in its universe.

Sheridan was the sole creator of 1883 and 1923, two spin-offs that followed the Dutton family’s ancestors in earlier eras. Both shows had intentionally limited runs and were released while Yellowstone was still on the air (1923 ended a few months after Yellowstone).

Outside the Yellowstone universe, Sheridan has created an impressive list of other series, including Landman, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, The Madison, and Lioness.

After Yellowstone ended, Sheridan joined the creative team behind two spin-offs. Marshals, a show about John Dutton’s son, Kayce, lists Sheridan as an executive producer. He also serves as an executive producer on Dutton Ranch.

In search of a fresh start, they attempt to rebuild in Texas on their newly crowned “Dutton Ranch.” But they soon cross paths with Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), the mysterious and ruthless matriarch from the historic 10 Petal Ranch.

The Dutton/Wheeler family and the Jackson family become further intertwined after Carter meets and falls in love with Beulah’s rebellious granddaughter, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind). Rip also works for Beulah for a time, but things don’t remain cordial for long.

As the season progressed, viewers learned about the battle for power within Beulah’s family and uncovered some dark secrets from her past…and present.

In addition to returning Yellowstone cast members Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Finn Little, the cast of Dutton Ranch features an all-star ensemble.
