Dutton Ranch Episode 7 – “Den Of Sin”
The episode begins in a flashback, with a 10 Petal ranch hand named Mariano giving young Beulah and her friends a ride to a honky tonk. We know from previous episodes that Mariano seems to be holding some sort of power over her.
Mariano admits to a bartender that he is there babysitting his boss’s daughter, and that he has a wife at home and a son named Joaquin. In Episode 3, we were led to believe that Joaquin’s parents didn’t have the means to raise him, so they had Beulah step in to do so.
Beulah sneaks out from his watch and Mariano goes looking for her. He finds her down the road disheveled, with just one boot on, and beat up from the man, Luke, she met at the bar.
As always, from here, we will break down the episode by character.
10 Petal Ranch Hands
In present day, the 10 Petal Ranch is getting ready for its 190th Anniversary Party and Beulah heads to the bunkhouse, where she tells her ranch hands that due to past parties being ruined by one of them drinking to much, she opened a tab at a bar in town for them.
Austin (Sterlin English) told Miguel, Beulah’s bodyguard, that he’d just like to stay home, but it is clear that Beulah does not want any of the ranch hands on the 10P property that evening.
At the bar, the 10 Petals hands are hanging out at a table, while two are playing cards with another guy. He stands up, accuses them of cheating, and says, “Y’all are as crooked and dirty as that 10 Petal you work for.”

The ranch hands remind him that he is out numbered but he returns later with more backup and they begin a huge bar fight. Azul hilariously watches everyone throwing punches and getting thrown over the bar.
The 10 Petal ranch hands help clean up the bar and they celebrate fighting for each other the way they used to. One hand tells Austin that it felt like old times.
“They ain’t wrong. 10 Petal’s dirty. Corrupt. We’re all f*cked,” Austin says.
Tommy asks him to just let it go, but Austin says that’s all they’ve done, and now Chet is missing as well. Azul and Zachariah look at each other, realizing they are in a bad situation.
Beth, Rip, and Carter
At the Dutton Ranch, Beth convinces Rip to wear a suit and while she is finishing up getting ready, Rip and Carter share a beer. Rip invites him to work at the 10 Petal on the weekends and asks how school is going. Of course, Carter lies through his teeth since he hasn’t been going.
Instead, he thanks Rip for taking him in, giving him a place to live, and looking out for him after all these years.
“You don’t have to thank me for anything, son,” Rip replies.
They ride over to the 10 Petal party on horseback, which Carter calls “f*cking cowboy.”
Once they arrive, Carter finally meets Beulah. He goes to find Oreana, who is chatting it up with a friend she knows from college. She introduces Carter as her “friend,” which hurts him, especially since he told Oreana he thinks he loves her in the last episode.

After Carter gets a drink at the bar, Sheriff Wade approaches him and asks him not to beat up Harrison Williams, the guy Oreana is talking to, because that wouldn’t turn out great for both of them.
Everett gives Carter some unsolicited advice about dealing with big parties before the veterinarian and Beulah share a sweet, silent moment together.
Carter is seen swinging back another cocktail when Oreana approaches him at the bar. Their conversation isn’t productive, but Oreana does give him some advice to stop throwing himself a pity party, which he doesn’t take so well. She admits to having sex with Harrison, though we don’t know when.
Carter wanders inside with a bottle of whiskey and stumbles upon Beulah’s office. His storyline is continued at the end of the recap.
Joaquin
Joaquin goes into his mother’s office to make sure she’s ready for her big speech, where she will reveal him as the 10 Petal’s new leader. She says it’s the same as any speech she’s ever given at one of these parties, so she isn’t nervous.
But he reminds her, “This one’s different. It’s your last.”
Joaquin tells her that he feels grateful to be following in her footsteps, and Beulah replies that his father would be proud.
“He will be,” Joaquin replies.

Joaquin approaches Rip and thanks him for helping him with the gunshot wound to his hand, and reassures him that no one will come looking for Chet. Rip couldn’t care less and walks away mid-conversation. His arc will continue in the last section.
Beulah
Beulah is meticulously watching over all the staff getting ready for the party and sees Oreana dressed for the occasion appropriately.
Beulah tells her granddaughter, “I’m just awfully sorry your daddy couldn’t be here to see you like this.”
Shockingly, Oreana seems to understand why, and replies, “He’s getting the help he needs.” Clearly, she is up to something.
Once the party begins, Beulah greets everyone at the door.
Later, Zane Nash, the Frontier Hospitality Group boss who supplies nearly every high-end hotel in Texas, arrives. Beulah gets him a drink.
Beth introduces Zane to Rip and they gift him some nice spurs. Beulah offers to give him a full tour of the ranch the next day so he can test out his new gift and learn more about their ranch.
Oreana politely interrupts the conversation to pull her grandmother for a chat in her office. Rob-Will is waiting for her. He reads part of her speech announcing Joaquin as her successor. He tells her, “My name is Robert William Jackson III. This [ranch] is my legacy.”
He demands that he anoint him as her successor or he will kill Joaquin.
Beulah watches Rob-Will and Joaquin see each other for the first time and Rob-Will is as arrogant as ever. In last episode, Joaquin assured Rip that his brother would never return, seeing as once he got out of rehab, he had a job overseas set up for him.
The addict then apologizes to Rip for their interaction at the gas station during the second episode, letting him know he is making his amends with people he has wronged due to his addictions.
The Party Ends With A Shocking Decision
Beulah takes the microphone to give her speech, where she makes a surprising decision, but one she has to to keep Joaquin safe.
“As of tonight, I intend to pass the ranch off to the next generation. In five years, Robert William Jackson III will be giving this speech as head of 10 Petal, our beef business, and our upcoming line of ranch-to-table steaks,” she announces.
Immediately, Joaquin packs a bag and leaves the property, but not before Rob-Will tries to get the last word.
Zane Nash is furious because he just made a deal with Beulah not knowing she was set to retire. She assures him that her son is the real deal, but Zane knows he’s a drug addict and is visibly upset.
All of a sudden, a drunk Carter emerges with a bull head that was mounted on Beulah’s office wall and he throws it on the ground. Rip jumps into action, but not before Beulah has a medical emergency. Everett rushes to her aide.
As she is going unconscious, she is brought back to a past anniversary party, where Mariano found her crying on the bathroom floor next to a positive pregnancy test.
He drives her to the baby’s father’s house. We see that it is Luke, the man she met at the honky tonk earlier in the episode. She goes in his house and through a silhouette in the window, Mariano watches Beulah shoot Luke twice, killing him.

He runs to her and with the gun still in her hand, she says, “I found my other boot,” as if it was nothing.
Only two episodes remain in the first season of Dutton Ranch, but there are still so many questions that need answering! Tune in June 26 and July 3rd for the final episodes.
Fun fact about this episode: Cassidy Daniels, a contestant on Taylor Sheridan’s singing competition show, The Road, is the performer at this party, proving that Sheridan likes to keep his talent in the family!
