Ed Harris Admits He Tried to Exit ‘Dutton Ranch’ Mid-Filming

As Dutton Ranch prepared to begin filming, Academy Award-nominated actor Ed Harris was one of the marquee additions to the cast.
Two Academy Award Nominees Joined The Cast Of Dutton Ranch
As excitement surrounding Dutton Ranch continued to build, the series landed another Hollywood heavyweight with the addition of four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening.
Widely regarded as one of the industry’s most accomplished actresses, Bening has starred in acclaimed films such as American Beauty, The Kids Are All Right, Being Julia, and The Grifters, bringing decades of prestige and award-winning talent to the highly anticipated series.

Ed Harris is considered one of the most respected actors of his generation, and his casting instantly adds prestige and credibility to any project. Some of his biggest accomplishments and why he’s such a significant addition to Dutton Ranch include four Academy Award nominations for Apollo 13 (Best Supporting Actor). The Truman Show (Best Supporting Actor), Pollock (Best Actor), and The Hours (Best Supporting Actor).
Harris won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Senator John McCain in HBO’s Game Change, adding to a career filled with critical acclaim across film and television.
His casting signaled the ambitions of Dutton Ranch. Actors of Harris’ caliber are selective about television roles, and his willingness to join the series suggested confidence in the script, the creative team, and the franchise.
Combined with the addition of Annette Bening, Dutton Ranch assembled one of the most prestigious casts in the Yellowstone universe before production even began.
Who Does Ed Harris Play?
Ed Harris plays Everett McKinney, a Vietnam War Navy veteran and longtime veterinarian who becomes one of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler’s most trusted allies after they relocate to Texas. Everett is introduced when Beth convinces him to save an injured horse rather than put it down, establishing his compassionate nature and deep respect for ranch life.
Everett ultimately proves he is far more than a veterinarian. In the Season 1 finale, he picks up a rifle and joins the fight to defend the Dutton ranch, demonstrating that beneath his quiet demeanor is a man willing to risk everything for the people he considers family.
Harris Revealed He Tried To Leave In The Middle Of Filming
Despite being one of the most beloved characters on the show, Harris revealed that he actually tried to exit the series in the middle of production.
While walking the red carpet for Apple TV’s The Dink, Harris revealed that he felt “misled” by what he was pitched for Dutton Ranch, saying that he was under the impression he would be one of the four main characters.
“Prior to signing on for [Dutton Ranch], I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters,” Harris said to Variety‘s Marc Malkin. “And that wasn’t really the case.”
The acting veteran said he felt “misled” about the significance of his role and about halfway through production, he actually asked his team to “get me the f*ck out of here.”
A moment that set him over the edge was when he had to film a scene singing in a bar, but they ended up cutting the whole thing.
“So there’s this scene in there … I’m talking to [Beth Dutton] at the bar, and [Rip Wheeler] comes in and says, ‘OK, Everett, come on, it’s your turn,” Harris said. “I walk up to the mic, and they cut it. They cut the song out. I’m going, ‘F*ck you, people.’”
If you recall in Episode 2, the band on stage called up Everett and Beth and Rip shared a dance to his performance, but we didn’t really see him singing or hear him all that well.
He felt like that was enough to get his contract voided.
Harris told some higher ups, “I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,” but all they said was, “Oh,” and also told him his character will have a bigger storyline in Season 2.
“I was just a little frustrated, to tell you the truth,” he revealed.
Harris revealed his contract is for two seasons, so we will see him back in Rio Paloma, but after watching this interview, he doesn’t seem so happy about it.
Perhaps this was one of the reasons that Chad Feehan, the show’s creator and showrunner was fired three weeks before the show premiered.
A new showrunner, Benjamin Cavell, has been appointed and it’s been reported that Taylor Sheridan will be back in the writing room. We hope Ed is more satisfied with his role in Season Two! We can’t wait to see where the story takes the characters, and would obviously love to see more of Everett.
While Variety has reached out to Sheridan and the production company, they haven’t heard back. But, Cole Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler, did see the interview and liked it on Instagram.
