Famed Pilot Rob Holland Killed In Crash Of “Experimental” Aircraft At Langley Air Force Base

Rob Holland, a celebrated aerobatic pilot, was the sole occupant of the aircraft.
A crash occurred at Langley Air Force Base on Thursday afternoon. It is reported that it happened around 11:50 a.m.
Initial reporting was limited, but it was confirmed that an “experimental” aircraft had been involved and that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was investigating.
The Federal Aviation Administration has now confirmed that an MX Aircraft MXS crashed, and the sole pilot had died. The plane was not a military aircraft but was set to be involved in the weekend airshow, Langley’s annual Air Power Over Hampton Roads.

The pilot was confirmed to be the famous airman Rob Holland.
A post on Rob Holland’s Facebook page confirmed that he was the pilot of the crashed aircraft.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I am sharing that Rob Holland lost his life today, 24 April 2025, in an accident at Langley AFB, VA. The cause of the crash is not known at this time, and is under investigation by the FAA, NTSB, and DOD.”
Rob Holland is a highly acclaimed aerobatic pilot who “was one of the most respected and inspiring aerobatic pilots in aviation history.”
No explanation has been given for the cause of the crash, which reportedly occurred during landing. A full investigation is underway and should have preliminary findings within the next few weeks.
There is currently no news as to whether the airshow will continue.
Col. Matthew Altman gave a recent update on the tragic crash. Saying, “Today we lost a friend of our Air Force family. On behalf of our entire JBLE team, I want to express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of this incredible aviator.”
