Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals State Of Her Relationship With Will Smith After Oscars Incident
on Jun 01, 2022
Jada Pinkett Smith spoke publicly for the first time since her husband, Will Smith, slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars on March 27.
In Wednesday’s episode of her talk show “Red Table Talk,” Pinkett Smith addressed the moment her husband confronted Rock after the comedian cracked a joke at her expense. Jada, who has been open about her alopecia diagnosis, found herself on the receiving end of a joke told by Chris Rock as he was on stage preparing to present the award for Best Documentary Feature.
“Jada, I love you. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it,” Rock said, referencing the 1997 Demi Moore movie in which the actress had a shaved head.
Will Smith made his way to the stage and appeared to slap Rock. Smith returned to his seat but seemed visibly upset as he yelled at Rock from the audience, saying: “Keep my wife’s name out of your ****ing mouth!” Most of the additional commentary from Rock was muted on American television.
The incident garnered a great deal of social media attention while also bringing attention to alopecia, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss. During “Red Table Talk,” Jada Pinkett Smith said that thousands have reached out to her with their own stories of struggling with alopecia before addressing the now-famous slap.
“Now, about Oscar night, my deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have an opportunity to heal, talk this out, and reconcile,” Pinkett Smith said referencing Smith and Rock. “The state of the world today, we need them both, and we all actually need one another more than ever.
Regarding the state of her marriage to Will Smith, the actress then told viewers that she and her husband are “continuing to do what we have done for the last 28 years, and that’s keep figuring out this thing called life together.”
Prior to Wednesday, Pinkett Smith had only addressed the incident briefly in an Instagram post dated two days after the Oscars. The post read: “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.”
