Kelly Clarkson got her start when she became the first-ever American Idol champion back in 2001. Since then, she’s won Grammys, hit number one on the charts, sold millions of records, and became an Emmy Award-winning talk show host!

During a recent chat with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett on their podcast, Smartless, Clarkson spoke about her time on the long-running singing competition show that kicked off her career.

Since Clarkson won American Idol, there hasn’t been anyone quite like her. She was lightning in a bottle from the moment she stepped on the set. From her playful banter with the judges to her soulful audition, even Simon Cowell knew he had just met a star. As the season progressed, apparently Clarkson ruffled the feathers of a “very high up” producer.

If you know anything about Kelly Clarkson after all these years, it’s that she is most comfortable without make up. If she is not filming something – and sometimes even when she is – she prefers to go make up free. This became a problem with a certain producer of the show.

Now, this shouldn’t surprise anyone, because she wore very little, if any, make up for her audition!

During Smartless, Clarkson revealed that this producer would try to remind her over and over that they were being filmed in behind the scenes clips.

“They were like, ‘So we’re about to be on camera,’ and I was like, ‘I know,’” she said. “And they were like, ‘But you’re going to be on camera,’ and I was like, ‘I know.’”

Clearly, she didn’t care, but she says, “One producer in particular, very high up, was not a fan of me just because I didn’t play that game. And it wasn’t even playing a game. The other four girls that season were very into that stuff. They were very into it.”

The other four women she was speaking about are Nikki McKibbin, Tamyra Gray, Christina Christian and Ryan Starr.

She joked that one their tour after the show, she was “the most amazing person to tour with” due to her never being in the makeup or hair chair. They pretty much had to force her to get her hair and makeup done before going on stage!

There’s a good reason why she doesn’t like ot wear make up: she is “highly allergic” to “anything that gets near [her] eyes.” We would avoid the makeup chair too!
