Lionel Richie Hospitalized Again – Rep Provides Health Update In New Statement

American Idol judge and legendary singer Lionel Richie has been hospitalized for the second time in a month after experiencing a series of health issues this year.
A rep for the “Lady” singer provided a statement to PEOPLE regarding his current situation. The rep explained that Richie underwent a medical procedure and is now recovering.
“Lionel underwent a common procedure for Atrial fibrillation,” the statement read. “The doctor said everything went perfectly.”
The rep continued to say, “Lionel is doing great but will take some time off and will be back on stage soon.”
The Mayo Clinic describes Atrial fibrillation (or AFib) as “an irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm.” The condition can cause blood clots in the heart and comes with a heightened risk of stroke and heart failure.
Symptoms of AFib include heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, and weakness. However, some people with the condition may not notice any obvious symptoms.
Lionel Richie Has Been Dealing With Some Puzzling Health Issues All Year
The news of Lionel Richie’s most recent hospitalization comes following a series of concerning health episodes.
It all started in June, when Richie said he was feeling “dizzy” onstage during a show in St. Paul, Minnesota. He took a seat while singing “Dancing on the Ceiling,” performed a few more tunes, and then the concert entered an unplanned intermission as he left the stage.
Richie never returned, opting to end the show early that night since he wasn’t feeling well. Following his doctors’ advice, he postponed some of his then-upcoming shows to focus on feeling better.
Richie shared a “thank you” message on social media on July 4th, writing:
“Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you.”

Richie returned to the road after his break, but suffered a second health episode after his concert on August 29. He was hospitalized and reportedly remained in the ICU for a few days.
PEOPLE reported at the time that Richie had been “doing great” after receiving treatment.
Lionel Richie Cancels Concerts Following Medical Procedure
Following the news of 77-year-old Richie’s recent hospitalization and AFib procedure, three of his upcoming concerts with Earth, Wind & Fire have been canceled.
PEOPLE reports that the affected shows are as follows:
- September 26 – San Francisco, CA
- September 30 – Chicago, IL
- October 2 – Columbus, OH
