Hello! reports that she passed away following a “period of ill health.”
Brenda Fricker Won An Academy Award In 1990
Brenda Fricker cemented her place in film history in 1990 when she became the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award, taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Bridget Fagan Brown, the devoted mother of Christy Brown (Daniel Day-Lewis) in My Left Foot (1989).

Her heartfelt portrayal was widely praised for its warmth, resilience, and emotional authenticity, helping elevate the acclaimed biographical drama into one of the year’s most celebrated films. In addition to her Oscar victory, Fricker also earned a Golden Globe nomination for the role.
Over a career that spanned more than six decades, Fricker became one of Ireland’s most respected character actresses, building an extensive résumé across film, television, and theater.
She appeared in dozens of productions, including the long-running BBC medical drama Casualty, where she played Megan Roach, as well as acclaimed films such as The Field, So I Married an Axe Murderer, A Time to Kill, Veronica Guerin, and Albert Nobbs. Known for bringing compassion and quiet strength to many of her characters, Fricker became a familiar face to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.
For many moviegoers, however, Fricker is best remembered as the “Pigeon Lady” in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). Initially portrayed as a mysterious figure living among the pigeons in New York City’s Central Park, the character ultimately becomes one of the film’s emotional anchors. Through her friendship with Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), the Pigeon Lady teaches lessons about loneliness, kindness, and human connection, creating one of the sequel’s most memorable and heartfelt storylines.
Two years later, Fricker starred in Disney’s Angels in the Outfield as Maggie Nelson, the caring foster mother of Roger (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and J.P. Her nurturing performance provided the emotional heart of the family sports fantasy, as Maggie looked after the boys while they dreamed of finding a permanent home. Like many of Fricker’s most beloved roles, Maggie embodied empathy, wisdom, and unconditional compassion—qualities that became hallmarks of the Oscar-winning actress’s remarkable career.
Fricker did not have any children and was not married at the time of her death. We sent our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to her loved ones.
