Pentagon Enters Lockdown Due To Reported “Hazardous Materials Incident”
on Jun 11, 2026 • Updated Jun 11, 2026

The Pentagon entered a partial lockdown on Thursday (June 11), and a shelter-in-place order was issued to those inside.
The Hill reports that the lockdown was a response to “an air quality issue” in the area. The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Arlington Fire & EMS published a brief statement about the situation at 10:41 AM ET, which read:
“ACFD units, including our Hazardous Materials Team, are currently operating at the Pentagon in support of PFPA’s Hazmat Team during a hazardous materials incident.”

CNN reported that multiple floors and corridors of the Pentagon were locked down during the incident. Meanwhile, some occupants were reportedly evacuated from the building.
An unnamed source told CNN that police who entered the building “wore gas masks and full chemical protective gear.”
CNN has since reported that two anonymous sources “familiar” with the situation informed the outlet that the lockdown was “due to a false alarm.”
The outlet continues to cite radio traffic from first responders and “a source familiar with the incident.” Based on what they learned, CNN reports that the Pentagon’s sensor system experienced a malfunction and “detected the possible presence of anthrax.” This led to the alleged false alarm.
Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Issues Statement About The Lockdown
Sean Parnell, the Chief Pentagon spokesperson, provided the following statement to The Hill regarding Thursday’s lockdown:
“The Pentagon has sophisticated systems to ensure the safety of the building and its occupants. Those systems have detected an air quality issue necessitating precautionary measures until we determine its significance. The Department is executing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area.”
Parnell added, “Response teams are in place and ready to support building occupants.”
He posted the same statement on X at 11:46 AM ET.
