After auditioning for judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson, Kelly Clarkson went on to win the inaugural season of the now-iconic singing competition series.

One of the reasons it is such a popular show is largely due to her talent and how successful she became after the show launched her career.

After Winning American Idol, Kelly Got To Choose An A-List Duet Partner

Kelly Clarkson was told that if she won American Idol, she could request a duet from one of her own idols at a celebration event. Because of her Texas background and her love of different genres, her idol could have literally been anyone!

In the end, she chose Reba McEntire! As Kelly introduced the country legend, she said,

“One of my inspirations from when I was a little girl—I have every record of her, I believe there’s like 30. Please welcome, my ‘American Idol,’ Reba McEntire!”

The two singers hugged, then Kelly bowed down to Reba. Then, Reba said to Kelly, “You stole my man…And I’m not happy about that.”

And with that, the two burst into one of Reba’s most notable songs, Does He Love You.”  At the utterance of the first verse, you can hear the audience go completely wild for this tremendous throwback hit!

Reba released the single in August 1993 as a duet with Linda Davis and the two took home a Grammy award for the iconic track just a few months later.

This Was The First Collaboration Of Many For Reba And Kelly

It’s clear that the respect was mutual for Reba, seeing as she and Kelly recorded “Because Of You” for Reba’s duets album in 2007.

In early 2008, they co-headlined the 2 Worlds 2 Voices Tour, which ran for almost the entire year.

Their connection would deepen when Clarkson married Brandon Blackstock in 2013. Brandon was Reba’s stepson, as she was married to Brandon’s dad, Narvel from 1989-2015.

In 2019, Reba told Country Living, “They told her when she won the very first American Idol that at the finals she could sing with her idol, and she chose me. So that’s the first time we got to meet. Little did we know we’d be relatives, we’d be in the same family.”

Even though neither of them are married to the Blackstock men anymore, they still cherish their relationship and speak very highly of one another!
