Red Clay Strays And Zach Top Surprise Georgia Rodeo Audience With A Classic Duet

On April 11, the Georgia Rodeo kicked off with an exciting lineup of artists, including performances by Zach Top and The Red Clay Strays.

It’s been a breakout year for both Zach Top and The Red Clay Strays. While they’re still new in mainstream music, they’ve quickly become two of the fastest rising acts in modern country music.

Top earned his first-ever ACM Award nomination this year, including a nod for Album of the Year for his debut record Cold Beer & Country Music. He’s also up for the New Male Artist award.

The Red Clay Strays, a country-rock band from Alabama, are seeing the same success. They’ve scored an ACM Award nomination this year for New Duo or Group of the Year.

With both acts dominating the music scene right now, it’s no surprise that hundreds of fans showed up in Georgia to watch them perform. But what the crowd didn’t expect was for Zach Top and the Red Clay Strays to team up for a surprise performance on stage together.

“Where Corn Don’t Grow” was first recorded by legendary artist Waylon Jennings for his 1990 album The Eagle. His version reached No. 67 on the country singles chart. But it wasn’t until six years later that the song really took off.

In 1996, Travis Tritt covered it for his album The Restless Kind, and his rendition broke into the Top 10, peaking at No. 6.

Red Clay Strays’ lead singer, Brandon Coleman, welcomed Zach Top to the stage before they began singing the classic country track. They sang so well that it was like they’d performed it together a thousand times.

Fans expressed how much they loved the duet in the comments section of a video that the band later posted.

“This is going to feed generations!” one person wrote

“I bet ol Waylon was smiling down proudly on you boys during that performance,” another said.

“The Red Clay Strays and Zach Top. We are not worthy,” stated someone else.
