The History Behind Shenandoah’s “Sunday In The South”

Shenandoah‘s brand-new remake of their classic hit, “Sunday in the South,” has reached the #1 spot on the all-genre iTunes chart.

“Sunday in the South” was originally released in May 1989 as the third single from Shenandoah’s album The Road Not Taken. Jay Booker wrote the track, which reflects on peaceful Sundays in the Southern United States.

The track reached the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart, becoming Shenandoah’s second chart-topping hit.

Their music video, directed by Larry Boothby, also debuted in 1989. The video was filmed at the Colbert County Courthouse in Tuscumbia, Alabama.

Now, 35 years after “Sunday in the South” was originally released, the song has a brand-new remake and a music video to match.

Jason Aldean And Luke Bryan Join Shenandoah For New Collaboration

Shenandoah enlisted two of modern country music’s biggest stars to help them remake “Sunday in the South.” Georgia-born artists Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan signed on to record a reimagined version of the song with the legendary country group.

Shenandoah’s Marty Raybon spoke with Country Rebel about how the collaboration came to fruition.

Raybon said he was talking to Bryan at a #1 song party when he mentioned that Shenandoah had just finished a re-recording of “Sunday in the South.” He asked Bryan if he’d like to record some vocals for the track.

Aldean, who was also at the event, overheard the conversation. He made it clear he also wanted to be involved in the remake.

Raybon said, “Aldean said, ‘If he’s doing it, I’m doing it.'”

They worked out all the intricacies, and Bryan and Aldean entered the studio to record their new vocals. “It was just a blessing for Luke and Jason to be a part of it,” Raybon said.

Raybon and fellow Shenandoah member Mike McGuire joined Aldean and Bryan to make a new music video for the song. The video was filmed at the Country Boy Restaurant in Leipers Fork, Tennesee.

The clip is a nostalgic nod to the original music video without being an exact recreation. “It’s not going to be the same because the place has changed, but certainly the premise of it has not,” Raybon said.

Shenandoah’s New “Sunday In The South” Remake Reaches #1 On iTunes

Shortly after the new music video debuted, “Sunday in the South” soared up the iTunes charts. As of 12 PM ET on Friday (December 6), the new version of the song sits at the #1 spot on the country and all-genre charts.

The song outranks holiday favorites such as “White Christmas” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” It also ranks higher than Shaboozey’s year-long hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and “Defying Gravity” from the hit movie musical Wicked.
