Episode five of 1923 follows Spencer and Alex as they try to find a way back to Montana from Africa. They encounter a tugboat captain named Lucca, who extends an offer. He’ll take them to the Suez Canal if Spencer agrees to serve as his deckhand.

Spencer takes Lucca up on his offer, but is reluctant to bring Alex along. He tells her to wait for him and promises to send for her later. But she announces she will never come back to him if he leaves her behind. Spencer doesn’t want to lose her, so he accepts the fact that she’s coming along.

But Spencer and Alex have no idea what they’re in for. Lucca’s boat is tiny and old, Lucca is coughing up blood, and he doesn’t have much to eat in the kitchen. Oh, and Lucca likes to tell stories about “ghost ships” he’s encountered at sea.

They discover one of these ghost ships on their journey. Lucca terrifies Spencer and Alex when he intentionally steers his boat toward the abandoned vessel in some sort of ritual.

Things go from bad to worse when Lucca dies. Spencer is left to take the helm, but ends up crashing the boat into the ghost ship. The episode ends with a shot of the overturned tugboat, leaving viewers wondering about Spencer and Alex’s fates.

The actor who played captain Lucca may look familiar to you, and for good reason. He’s starred in tons of notable projects, so you likely recognize him from somewhere.

Lucca was portrayed by Swedish actor Peter Stormare. He is known for playing Gaear Grimsrud in the movie Fargo, John Abruzzi in the TV series Prison Break, and Dr. Alan J. Hill in the video game Until Dawn.

Stormare has appeared in dozens of other projects over the course of his career, including The Big Lebowski, Armageddon, and Secrets of the Viking Stone. Which one of his past projects is your favorite?

Unfortunately, Stormare wasn’t on 1923 for long. But he certainly left his mark on the show!
