Hear The Country Artist Riley Green Knew He “Needed” On His “Voice” Team

Season 30 of The Voice premiered on Monday, September 21, with country singer Riley Green making his debut as a coach. He joins fellow first-time coach Queen Latifah and former champions Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine.
Green began building his team during the premiere, snagging country-singing contestants such as Joe Henley and Dollywood singers Ferryn and Brinkley Wright. Another country artist who joined team Riley was 25-year-old Caroline Alexis, who’s from Green’s home state of Alabama.
Alexis auditioned with a cover of Rascal Flatts‘ “Take Me There.” The song became a #1 country hit for the trio following its release in 2007.

Several of the Voice coaches initially appeared poised to hit their buttons for Caroline Alexis’ cover of “Take Me There.” Adam Levine came close to pressing his button, but held back right before he did so.
After taking some time to listen, Riley Green turned his chair for Alexis’ performance. The other coaches remained facing the opposite direction, leaving Green as the only one who turned around. So Alexis automatically joined his team!
Riley Green Shares What He Loved About Caroline Alexis’ Performance On The Voice
After Caroline Alexis introduced herself, Kelly Clarkson shared why she didn’t turn her chair for her performance. She said after Riley Green flipped around, she knew she didn’t stand a chance against him.
Upon learning that Alexis was from Alabama, like Green, Clarkson remarked, “I’m so glad I saved myself the embarrassment.“
Green was understandably thrilled to have a fellow Alabama native on his team. He also made it clear he was a huge fan of her performance, saying, “I love your tone, I love the song choice, I love the way you performed it.”
Surprisingly, Alexis shared that she isn’t pursuing a full-time career in singing. She recently graduated from law school and told the coaches that she’s been studying for the bar exam in her downtime.
Green joked, “We’re a lot alike, I go to the bar in my downtime too.”
After presenting Alexis a pair of customized “Team Riley” Carhartt overalls, Green said, “Well, Caroline, I’m super excited to have you on ‘The Voice’ and on my team.”
In a behind-the-scenes interview after the fact, Green shared his relief that he didn’t need to fight the other coaches for Alexis. He declared, “She’s somebody that needed to be on my team.”
