Jason “Sundance” Head, 46, is recovering after accidentally shooting himself on his rural Texas ranch.

Sundance Head, winner of The Voice Season 11 in 2016, suffered a gunshot wound to his stomach on Friday (November 15). In a post shared by his wife, Misty, it was revealed that the singer was removing a .22 pistol from his Jeep when the gun came out of its holster and “hit the exterior of the Jeep just right and went off” causing a bullet to hit him.

The doctor told Misty that the bullet went in just above his navel and missed all of his vital organs. The bullet lodged in the fatty tissue and the doctors opted not to do surgery to remove it.

In an update posted on Saturday, Sundance’s wife shared that the singer had been released from the hospital and was at home recovering.

“It was a ruff 3 hr ride home for him as the meds were wearing off and bc he was moving he was bleeding badly through his dressings,” she wrote. “Not sure I slept bc I was worried about him as was he but hearing him snore was music to my ears.”

The update was accompanied by a photo of the shirt Sundance was wearing when he was shot. A bullet hole is visible, showing where he was hit.

“Any higher or lower would have been devastating,” Misty said.

Who is Sundance Head?

Sundance Head is the son of chart-topping musician Roy Head. He once said that he was on stage for as long as he can remember and expected to be famous before he graduated high school.

At 27, Head competed on American Idol during the show’s sixth season in 2007 and was eliminated during the semi-finals. He competed on Season 11 of The Voice in 2016. He earned chair turns from Blake Shelton and Adam Levine after his cover of Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.”

Head chose to join Team Blake and went on to win the coveted Voice trophy.
