Bear Sneaks Up On Woman As She Plays On Her Phone

Melanie Porter, from Quesnel, British Columbia had a very scary encounter with a wild bear after going out one evening to smoke a cigarette on her porch.
Prince George Citizen reported her saying, “I look up and it’s a bear and I freeze. I’m thinking ‘oh, what do I do? What do I do?’ I’m just going to stay still.”
She explained that she was scrolling through TikTok on her phone when she looked up and spotted the large apex predator slowly walking towards her. When the bear gets to her, it stops and looks directly at her just three feet away.
She said, “I’m thinking ‘oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, shit, shit,’ and it sniffs me and it licks my right hand. Then it tries to lick my hand again and it kind of opened its mouth and then I grabbed my arm back and he kind of backed up.”
The bear leaned back on its back feet then lifted both of its front paws up off the ground. She said it looked like it was going to stand up on its hind legs and she quietly sat there completely terrified.
“I was like ‘oh my gawd!'” she explained. “I am going to pick up my phone and take a picture because who’s going to believe me? And if I die at least they’ll see who the culprit is.”
Fortunately, the bear dropped its paws back down to the ground and ran off back into the darkness the way it came.
Melanie said once the bear got away from her she got up and leaned her back on the front door to open it. However, she forgot that she had cracked the door earlier and fell back onto the ground into her home and landed on her back. She was able to get up and get inside her house and shut the door.
She then called her neighbor across the street who she knew had home security footage that would have caught the encounter with the bear on video.
She said she decided not to call the conservation officers to report it out of fear they would hunt it down and kill the bear.
Her neighborhood sees many bears quite often and they all take preventative measures to keep a harmonious relationship with the wildlife.
The one takeaway she says she took from the whole experience though is that it has inspired her to stop smoking cigarettes.
