Dolly Parton was one of the most beloved and influential entertainers in American history. A singer, songwriter, actress, author, philanthropist, and businesswoman, the East Tennessee native spent decades entertaining audiences with her unmistakable voice, larger-than-life personality, and gift for storytelling.
Born and raised in the mountains of Eastern Tennessee, Parton’s upbringing was the foundation of her success. The fourth of 12 children, Dolly was an unashamed dreamer who desired to help her family out of poverty, but never forgot where she came from when she found success.
Dolly’s impact reached far beyond country music. With recorded hits like “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “I Will Always Love You” to film and television appearances, and her iconic Dollywood theme park, Dolly Parton was one of the few artists who bridged gaps between musical genres and entertainment platforms without compromising who she was at heart.
A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, she has earned countless awards and honors throughout her legendary career. In addition, she was a brilliant entrepreneur and self-proclaimed dreamer. Known as much for her generosity as her talent and iconic looks, Dolly founded the Imagination Library, which has provided millions of free books to children around the world. To date, the Imagination Library has gifted more than 300,000,000 books to children around the world. “Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly started her Imagination Library in 1995 for the children within her home county. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts millions of free books each month,” the website reads.
Dolly was married to her husband, Carl Dean, for nearly 60 years until his death on March 3, 2025. The two shared an unlikely love story due to Carl’s desire to stay out of the spotlight while his wife became one of the most iconic entertainers in history.
Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80. She left behind an incredible legacy of love and generosity that will long be honored and remembered.
