Expressing his profound grief, the Grammy-nominated artist paid a heartfelt tribute to his dear pet, acknowledging the significant role Cole played in his life. Cole, who was a retired racing Greyhound before he was adopted by Hayes, had not only been a faithful companion throughout the years, but also became a source of comfort for the artist. In the post, Hayes described Cole as a “distinguished gentleman” who has completed his “final lap around the sun on earth” and has now retired to a better place.
The Bond Between Hayes and Cole
Painting a vivid picture of their strong and meaningful connection, Hayes emphasized the special bond they shared. The tribute detailed the joy and support Cole brought into the musician’s life throughout the years they spent together.
“I’ve never known a man that has taught me so much,” Hayes wrote. “How to be still, how to appreciate nature and how to create peace. I am so full of gratitude for all of the incredible adventures we had together and for all the life lessons he taught me like no one else could.”

This isn’t the first time Hayes has affectionately talked about his admiration for Cole. In a 2021 interview with PEOPLE, Hayes highlighted the special connection they shared, dubbing Cole as his “roommate” and said that he was the “boss” of the household. Despite being 11 years old at the time, Hayes remarked that spiritually, Cole was the youngest he had ever been.
In this moment of sorrow, it’s clear that Cole undoubtedly became more than just a pet for Hayes— he was a true and loyal friend.
