Throwback To When Kelly Clarkson Sang Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” With Chris Daughtry At A Concert In 2010

“Fast Car” is a song that’s taken the world by storm more than once. Tracy Chapman wrote the song on her own, and released her original recording in 1988.

Chapman drove “Fast Car” to the sixth spot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song led to three Grammy nominations and one win.

Many artists have covered “Fast Car” in the years since. Though among all the covers, Luke Combs’ stands out.

Combs performed “Fast Car” live for years before recording it. He released his version in 2023, and it accelerated up the charts. It became a #2 hit on the all-genre Hot 100 chart. The song also claimed the #1 slot on the Country Airplay chart.

“Fast Car” also eventually took home two trophies at the 2023 CMA Awards.

The latter feat made Chapman the first black female solo songwriter to ever land a #1 hit on that particular chart. She expressed her support for Combs’ cover in a statement provided to Billboard:

I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there,” she said. “I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car.'”
