Kevin Costner Shares His Feelings About The Box Office Numbers For “Horizon”
on Aug 10, 2024
The Story Behind Horizon‘s Box Office Performance
After being in the entertainment industry for over four decades, Kevin Costner has learned that box office results don’t always mean everything.
On June 28, Costner released the first film in his epic Horizon movie saga. The project, which Costner stars in and directs, is supposed to have three more parts.
The film came in third place at the box office over its opening weekend and grossed a total of $11 million. This was an unfortunate result, since Costner invested $38 million of his own money into the project…and its total expenses were far higher.
Horizon fell to the sixth spot at the box office after its second week in theaters. By then, it had generated a worldwide gross of a little over $22.2 million.
The movie generated more buzz once it became available to watch at home. After being released on Prime Video, Apple TV+, VUDU, and Google Play, it became the #1 film on the VOD (Video on Demand) Top 10 list.
The second Horizon movie was originally scheduled to open on August 16, but its release has since been delayed. A new release date has not been announced.
Kevin Costner Addresses The Box Office Numbers & Says He’s Dealt With Dismissivenes Before
Costner addressed Horizon‘s box office performance during a recent conversation with E! News. The former Yellowstone star told the outlet he doesn’t fret over box office results, because he’s been in the same boat before.
He recalled the initial reaction some had to his 1989 film Field of Dreams. A Vanity Fair article published that same year theorized the film would likely “disappear quickly.”
Of course, we now know that multiple generations of movie watchers love Field of Dreams.
“It was so dismissive, that Field of Dreams would fade immediately,” Costner told E! “And we’re still doing celebrations of it. Men and women, sons and daughters, it’s stood the time of decades, now generations—and that’s how I try to make movies. That’s what I see for Horizon.”
The actor then spoke specifically about Horizon and why he believes the film will stand the test of time:
“I’ve faced life with people being dismissive of me. But they can’t be dismissive of Horizon, because now it’s out of their hands. And they might point to the finish line—well, this is what it did at the box office—but I know that this movie is going to play for the next 50 years.”
Costner continued:
“There’s a moment in time where you want [your children] to see this movie. To understand that this is what their [ancestors] went through. It’s not just a western, it’s a history of migration and what they had to do to survive. And I’m really proud of it.”
What Does Costner Think About Postponing The Release Of Horizon: Chapter 2?
Costner also addressed the choice to delay the release of Horizon‘s second chapter. As it turns out, he never wanted to release the first two films so close together.
“I didn’t ever imagine [the releases] six weeks apart, it was always four months, or six months. But the studio saw an opportunity, they thought it could be something.”
Now, the delay gives Horizon: Chapter 2 a special opportunity. The Venice Film Festival will screen the film on September 7, which they wouldn’t have done if it was already in theaters.
“So, one thing happens—and the next, I get this other thing to happen,” Costner said.
The greater public will have to wait a little longer to see what unfolds in Horizon‘s second chapter. In the meantime, enjoy a trailer for the first film below.
