on Feb 03, 2020 • Updated Feb 08, 2023
A heart-wrenching commercial that chronicles the real-life story of the 85-year-old grandfather of a Google employee, this 2020 Super Bowl commercial from the huge search giant and technology firm has really hit home for millions of Americans.
Featuring the grandfather’s voice and telling how Google’s own voice assistant helped him with his memory and recalling special moments with his late wife, the ad shows just how this piece of technology was able to improve the quality of life for this man.
Titled “Loretta” after the name of the late wife, the commercial is just a series of photos and voice commands from the grandfather as he remembers the woman he loved for decades.
“Hey Google,” he says, his voice sounding feeble with age. “Show me photos of me and Loretta.”
The digital assistant then pulls up a couple of photos that show the two love birds smiling – clearly from many years ago. One of which shows him with a mustache.
Laughing, he continues, “Remember, Loretta hated my mustache!”
The assistant then responds, “Ok, I’ll remember that.”
Continuing on, he talks about their favorite movie, how Loretta always snorted when she laughed and then rolls clips of some of the best moments of their lives. The Google assistant then rolls a list of all the wonderful things about Loretta that he asked it to remember – including one solemn statement from Loretta.
“Loretta always said, don’t miss me too much, and get out of the dang house.”
