‘Marshals’: Miles Risks His Life In A Dangerous Mission At Broken Rock
on

Since making its debut in March 2026, Marshals has continued the story of one of the most compelling characters from Yellowstone.
The CBS drama stars Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, who leaves his life on the Yellowstone Ranch behind and following the death of his wife, Monica, he joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana. Combining his experience as a cowboy and former Navy SEAL, Kayce takes on dangerous cases while navigating the personal struggles that come with his new career.
The series also features Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means as members of the team, bringing a mix of action, suspense, and complicated relationships to the Yellowstone universe.

The series quickly proved to be a hit for CBS, with its Season 1 premiere attracting 9.52 million viewers on its initial broadcast, making it the network’s most-watched new scripted series debut without a football lead-in since 2018.
Its success led to a Season 2 renewal just days after its premiere, demonstrating the continued popularity of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise. Beyond the high-stakes missions, Marshals explores Kayce’s efforts to rebuild his life and raise his son, Tate.

With the Dutton family’s complicated legacy still looming over him, Kayce must balance his responsibilities as a father with the dangers of enforcing the law across Montana.
Episode 3 of the season, which aired on CBS on Sunday, October 18, is titled “Falling Sky,” and the log line reads:
“The Marshals are sent to track three Broken Rock residents accused of shooting down a military test drone, and tensions rise between federal authorities and tribal leadership after the drone crash takes the life of a Broken Rock member. Meanwhile, Kayce worries for Tate’s mental state and finds new methods to connect with his son.”
Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 3 of Marshals are ahead!
Marshals Season 2, Episode 3 – “Falling Sky” Recap
The episode opens with a group of wild horses being spooked by a flying object that appears to be a drone. Nearby, three Broken Rock residents attempt to shoot it down.
Meanwhile, Kayce and Cal discuss Cal’s upcoming first chemotherapy appointment. Kayce offers to accompany him, but Cal declines. During their conversation, Kayce admits that fixing his cabin has been easier than figuring out how to connect with Tate. Before they can continue, gunshots ring out nearby, prompting the two men to investigate.

They discover that the shooter is Tate, who has been practicing his aim. Kayce is surprised to see his son taking an interest in guns, something Tate has never shown much enthusiasm for before. Tate explains that he is learning to shoot because his father once told him that the only person who can protect him is himself.
After their conversation, Kayce spots a buffalo in the distance. The sight stops him in his tracks, much like it did in Episode 2.

The buffalo could carry deeper meaning for Kayce and Tate. In many Indigenous traditions, buffalo are associated with themes such as provision, strength, unity, and resilience. The animal’s appearance may also be significant given Kayce’s history of seeing wolves in Yellowstone, which carried spiritual meaning for him.
There is also a powerful connection between the history of the buffalo and the history of Native American land. As Indigenous communities were displaced, buffalo populations were devastated. Now, as land returns to Indigenous stewardship, the buffalo are returning, too.
Tate, who is both Dutton and Native American, finds himself caught between two worlds. Having endured tremendous loss, he is trying to find his own strength and figure out how to survive everything that has happened to him. His conversation with Kayce suggests that he is increasingly focused on protecting himself, perhaps because he feels he has lost so much on both sides of his family.

Andrea Struggles With Her Past
Elsewhere, Belle and Andrea look at an apartment for Andrea, who is planning to stay in Montana long-term. During their conversation, Belle reveals that she discovered someone had logged into an NYPD database using one of their computers.
Belle suspects the cop-killer case they worked on the previous week brought up painful memories for Andrea, whose father was an NYPD officer killed in the line of duty.
Later, as the women head downstairs to inspect the apartment’s basement storage, Andrea becomes visibly unsettled. Her reaction may be connected to the trauma she experienced when she was held hostage by the Clegg family in Season 1.
Although Andrea initially brushes off Belle’s concerns, the episode makes it clear that she may still be struggling with the events of her past.
Broken Rock Faces a Growing Threat
At the Broken Rock Reservation, Chairman Rainwater faces mounting frustration from residents who are concerned about drones flying over their land. This explains the opening scene, in which three men attempt to shoot one down.
Rainwater and Mo try to explain that the operation is taking place outside the reservation’s borders, limiting what they can do. However, residents believe the drones are retaliation for their efforts to protect the reservation’s water, arguing that their actions have angered powerful people.
During the meeting, one resident proposes opening a cannabis farm. With recreational marijuana legal in Montana, he sees an opportunity for the tribe to enter a lucrative market and generate revenue. Rainwater rejects the proposal, insisting that drugs, whether legal or not, are not the answer.
Moments later, the men watch in horror as a drone crashes nearby and triggers a massive explosion.
The Marshals soon arrive at the scene and learn that the crash is their next case. The explosion killed a beloved older member of the reservation known as Uncle Charlie, a man Miles personally knew.
The investigation becomes even more complicated when Gavin Escher, the CEO of Horus Avionics, the company that manufactured the drones, arrives at headquarters alongside members of the Air Force.
They identify three Broken Rock residents — brothers Koda and Matthew Nash, along with Jacob Green — as suspects in the drone’s destruction. Because the military cannot make the arrests themselves, they task the Marshals with bringing the men in.
As the team discusses its approach, Miles decides to put himself back on desk duty, despite recently reaching an agreement with Cal to return to fieldwork. He does not want to be put in the position of going after his own people.

Andrea eventually convinces him to join the team, arguing that his presence could help keep the peace between the Marshals and the reservation. Kayce and Miles head to Broken Rock, where they assure Rainwater that they will conduct their search fairly.

The three suspects, all of whom have criminal records, are nowhere to be found. When Kayce and Miles search the house where the men are believed to be hiding, they discover Jacob Green lying dead with a gunshot wound to the head.
Miles immediately argues that the case should now be treated as a murder investigation. Cal refuses to abandon the original assignment, however, explaining that the Department of Defense wants the Nash brothers arrested for the drone incident before the murder can be investigated.
The decision threatens to deepen the divide between the Marshals and the reservation. During this scene, Kayce tells Mo about the buffalo, and that he doesn’t even know if it’s actually real.

Mo replies, “The buffalo symbolizes self sacrifice, but you’ve already lost everything. Except for Tate. The buffalo could be here to make you confront your shame, inspire you to take action.”
This resonates with Kayce and he takes Mo’s advice to heart later in the episode.
Kayce and Tate Reach a Breaking Point
Back at East Camp, Kayce finds a college brochure in the mail and brings it to Tate. He reminds his son that Monica always dreamed of him going to college. Tate pushes back, questioning whether his mother would really want Kayce hunting people from her own tribe.
The exchange highlights the growing distance between father and son. Kayce is trying to honor Monica’s memory and give Tate a future, but Tate is struggling with the choices his father has made and the conflicting loyalties that define their family.
Hoping they could both use a break, Kayce suggests taking a fishing trip together. Tate quickly reminds him of the trauma he recently endured by Tom Weaver, making it clear that the last place he wants to be is near a river.
Their conversation shows just how difficult it has become for Kayce to reach his son, even when his intentions are good.
The Investigation Takes a Dark Turn
Meanwhile, Belle offers to accompany Cal to his first chemotherapy appointment. He declines, believing she has enough going on at home without worrying about him, too.
As the investigation continues, Andrea, Belle, and Miles discover that the Nash brothers recorded footage of the drones and uploaded it to a shared file. They also find another user connected to the file.
Belle theorizes that the brothers may have killed Jacob because they did not want him revealing their involvement in what appeared to be an espionage operation. Miles seems to take offense to this.

Kayce later meets with Rainwater, who has been confronted by Jacob Green’s father. The grieving father is furious that he trusted the chairman and the Marshals to protect his son, only to have Jacob end up dead.

The confrontation leaves Rainwater facing a painful reality: the investigation is threatening to turn members of his own community against one another.
The Marshals eventually receive a tip that the Nash brothers are hiding in an abandoned community center. When the team arrives, they encounter two gunmen with military training who seem to know their every move.
The Marshals split up to search the building. Kayce and Miles head toward the woods, while Belle, Andrea, and Cal clear the rest of the structure.
Inside the library, they discover Matthew Nash, who has been wounded. Koda, however, is nowhere to be found. Andrea stays with Matthew to administer first aid.
Matthew insists that he and his brother did not shoot down the drone that killed Uncle Charlie. According to Matthew, the military had claimed the drones were unarmed, but the one that crashed was carrying explosives and detonated before reaching its target.
The revelation suggests that the residents of Broken Rock may have been right to question what was happening over their land.
Miles Risks Everything to Save Koda
Kayce and Miles find Koda and eventually spot a drone tracking him. Realizing the drone could lead armed pursuers directly to Koda, Miles makes a split-second decision: he puts on Koda’s clothes to draw the drone and its operators away from Kayce and Koda.
The plan puts Miles directly in the line of fire.
The team soon discovers that although the drone itself is unarmed, its pilot is communicating with the gunmen on the ground and directing them toward their target.
The shooters begin firing at Miles as Cal, Kayce, and Belle work to locate both the drone pilot and the gunmen. Cal and Belle take down the pilot, while Kayce finds one of the shooters.

Working together, Kayce and Miles manage to defeat the second gunman.
The truth finally comes to light: the gunmen are connected to the drone company’s security team and were working to pit members of the Broken Rock Tribe against one another.
By making the reservation’s residents appear responsible for the violence, the perpetrators hoped to fuel internal conflict and distract from their own actions.
With the conspiracy exposed, Jacob Green’s father thanks Kayce and Miles for bringing justice to his son. He also expresses gratitude to Rainwater for refusing to abandon the fight for his people.
The case offers a measure of closure, but it does not resolve the larger problems facing the reservation.
Rainwater even begins reconsidering the cannabis cooperative he previously rejected, acknowledging that something must change if the reservation is going to have a better future.
Cal Faces His First Chemotherapy Treatment
While the Marshals bring the investigation to a close, Cal faces a battle of his own.
Earlier in the episode, he declined Belle’s offer to accompany him to his first chemotherapy appointment. But when he finally arrives at the hospital and sees other patients receiving treatment, the reality of what lies ahead begins to overwhelm him.
Just as he struggles to take it all in, Belle appears beside him.
“You are not doing this alone,” she tells him.
It is a powerful moment for Cal, who has spent much of the episode trying to shield others from the burden of his illness. Belle’s arrival reminds him that accepting support is not a weakness, and that he does not have to face his diagnosis by himself.
Kayce Makes a Difficult Decision for Tate
The episode closes with another emotional confrontation at the Dutton cabin.
Kayce tells Tate that he is taking him to see a therapist the following morning. Tate immediately pushes back, and the conversation turns into an argument.
Kayce explains that he believes therapy is the right place for his son, especially because it is the last place his own father would have taken him — and the last place Kayce would have gone himself.
“Hopefully, that makes it the right place for you,” he tells Tate.
Tate storms off to bed, leaving their conflict unresolved.
The moment is an important one for Kayce, who is beginning to recognize that his son needs more help than he can provide on his own. He may not always know how to communicate with Tate, but he is trying to break the cycle of silence and emotional isolation that has followed the Dutton family for generations.
For Tate, however, accepting that help will likely be another difficult step in his healing process.
As viewers, we want nothing more than to see Tate find peace after everything he has endured. Kayce’s decision to seek professional help for his son could be the beginning of that journey, even if Tate is not ready to accept it just yet.
