Season 2 of Marshals picks up with Kayce Dutton navigating a new chapter of his life as he trades the familiar world of the Yellowstone Ranch for the challenges of working with an elite team of U.S. Marshals in Montana.

As he adjusts to his new role, Kayce continues to wrestle with the emotional weight of his past while trying to protect his family and find a sense of purpose in his new career. The season has already delivered plenty of intense moments, blending high-stakes law enforcement cases with the personal struggles that make the Dutton family story so compelling.

The season opened with a shocking hostage situation involving Kayce’s son, Tate, and a dangerous land-grab scheme tied to East Camp. Kayce’s desperate attempt to save Tate leads to a violent confrontation with Tom Weaver, a man both trusted, and devastating consequences that continue to weigh on him.

Since then, the Marshals have faced a revenge-driven former police officer, rising tensions between federal authorities and the Broken Rock reservation, and a dangerous pursuit involving a fugitive bomber.

Beyond the action, the season is also exploring the personal challenges facing the team, including Cal’s battle with cancer, Belle’s struggles at home, and Kayce’s efforts to connect with Tate as his son copes with everything he has endured.

With each new case bringing fresh dangers and personal stakes, Season 2 is proving that even though Kayce has left the Yellowstone Ranch behind, finding peace may be more difficult than he ever imagined.

Marshals Season 2, Episode 4 Recap – “Blast Radius”

The log line for Episode 5, titled “Blast Radius,” is as follows:

“When Kayce and Andrea’s off-hours fugitive hunt unexpectedly reveals the whereabouts of a notorious bomber who previously slipped through Cal’s fingers, the team is pulled into a dangerous pursuit that threatens to open old wounds. Meanwhile, threats against Belle move frighteningly close to home, and Miles finds himself hiding crucial information from Maddie about Cal’s cancer.”

And it turns out, we’ve met this serial bomber before in Season 1.

The episode begins with a flashback to a young Kayce shortly after he received the Yellowstone brand on his chest. He applies burn cream to the fresh brand, causing him extreme pain. But just as we begin to wonder what we’re watching, we return to the present day, where Kayce wakes up on the couch. It was only a dream… or perhaps a nightmare.

With Tate getting help from a therapist, Kayce throws himself into work to distract himself from his own demons. Andrea seems eager to do the same, and the two begin tackling cases together without the rest of the team. Before the first commercial break, they’ve already arrested a handful of criminals!

But their busy day is about to get much more complicated.

Belle’s Gambling Debt Comes Back To Haunt Her

While walking through town with her son, Belle discovers that her car window has been smashed. She’s then confronted by a large man who informs her that her debt, plus interest, is due. Remember Belle’s gambling problem from Season One? It looks like that storyline is far from over!

Meanwhile, Miles visits Maddie at Bullet & Barrel, where she opens up about her strange evening with her father, Pete “Cal” Calvin.

Later, Belle arrives at headquarters and finds Cal, fresh from chemotherapy, lifting weights. She warns him not to overdo it, but Cal has other things on his mind. He reveals that he’s told their boss, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Harry Gifford, about his cancer diagnosis and treatment plan.

Gifford subsequently approaches Cal about finding someone to take over his responsibilities while he’s on medical leave. He suggests Andrea as a potential replacement, but Cal isn’t entirely convinced she has what it takes to lead the team.

Gifford also speaks with Andrea about her future in the department. Although he seems to be offering advice to help her climb the ranks, Andrea doesn’t interpret the conversation that way.

As the episode progresses, Kayce helps Andrea realize that she’s likely next in line for Cal’s position, given that she’s the team’s most senior Marshal. However, Andrea is also dealing with something she hasn’t shared with anyone: visions of the Clegg family that leave her visibly shaken.

The Search For Rudy Carpenter Begins

While bringing a fugitive into custody, Kayce and Andrea receive an unexpected lead. The man offers to provide valuable information in exchange for a shorter sentence, revealing the whereabouts of Rudy Carpenter, the serial bomber whom Cal and Kayce let go in Season One.

Remember Rudy? Cal and Kayce were forced to let him escape while trying to save Tom Weaver from the plane crash. Now, he’s back in Montana, and the Marshals have another chance to bring him to justice.

Cal and Kayce revisit that fateful decision, and Kayce makes a rather harsh observation about what happened that day.

“The only sin we did that day was save Tom Weaver,” he says.

Yikes! That’s certainly one way to look at it.

With Rudy back on their radar, Belle and Kayce head to a country club to speak with his ex-wife, Audrey, who is playing a round of golf. Kayce is clearly unfamiliar with the sport and the club, but he mentions that his brother and sister were members.

This marks the first acknowledgment of Beth since the series began! Could this be a hint that a Dutton Ranch crossover might be possible? We’re certainly not ruling it out!

The conversation takes an unexpected turn when the two Deputy Marshals ride onto the golf course on horseback. As they approach Audrey, they’re confronted by two men, but Kayce and Belle quickly take both of them down.

Audrey explains that she hired bodyguards to protect herself after learning that Rudy was in Montana. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have any useful information about his whereabouts. She does, however, leave the Marshals with a warning: “Good luck catching him. He always has an escape plan.”

That doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

The Marshals Discover Rudy’s Plan

Back at headquarters, Cal and Miles investigate a tip that leads them to security footage from a gas station. The footage shows Rudy leaving a bag in a dumpster. Inside, they discover a piece of paper containing a dark web address and a shotgun whose serial number matches a weapon Rudy used in a previous crime.

The investigation quickly escalates when Cal calls the team in early after the tech team discovers that Carpenter is trying to make a deal with a local gang known as The Disciples.

Two members of the gang have outstanding arrest warrants, giving the Marshals legal grounds to move in. The team decides to target the mechanic shop where the gang members are working, but the operation quickly turns dangerous when the suspects open fire.

The Marshals manage to take two men into custody for questioning while calling an ambulance for another. Cal struggles to get information from one suspect, but Kayce takes a different approach with the other, successfully pressuring him to talk.

The information they uncover is alarming: Rudy is planning to build a pipe bomb.

At this point, the Marshals are all hands on deck. Chief Gifford calls in additional teams from surrounding areas to help with the search.

Miles manages to track where Rudy’s phone was pinging the previous night, and Kayce and Cal head out to investigate. During the drive, Kayce tries to reassure Cal that letting Rudy escape wasn’t his fault. But Cal is feeling the pressure from Gifford to bring the bomber in, and he can’t shake the feeling that he’s responsible for what happened.

Unfortunately, their investigation reveals just how dangerous Rudy has become. He has stolen eight barrels of ANFO, an explosive mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, which could cause devastation over an enormous area.

Then Miles spots Carpenter’s van on surveillance footage, giving the team another important lead.

Kayce And Andrea’s Lives Are Left Hanging In The Balance

As the investigation intensifies, Andrea continues struggling with her troubling visions of the Clegg family. She hasn’t opened up to anyone about what she’s experiencing, even as the pressure at work mounts.

Meanwhile, Cal studies the surveillance footage and suddenly realizes he knows where Rudy is hiding.

The team prepares to move in, fully aware of Audrey’s warning that Rudy always has an escape plan. They approach his hideout cautiously and discover him loading up his van.

But Rudy isn’t going down without a fight.

He opens fire on the Marshals and is hit in the exchange, yet he manages to escape into a nearby barn.

Kayce and Andrea enter the building and find him sitting on the ground.

Kayce orders Rudy to show his hands. But just when it seems the Marshals might finally have him in custody, Rudy detonates a bomb.

Kayce and Andrea attempt to escape the blast, but the barn explodes with both of them still inside.

And that’s where the episode ends.

The screen displays the dreaded words: “To Be Continued…”

What Happens Next On ‘Marshals’?

Talk about a cliffhanger. The episode leaves us with so many questions.

Will Kayce and Andrea survive the explosion? If they do, how seriously have they been injured? And will Cal blame himself for what happened after the two Marshals entered the barn without him?

There’s also the question of whether Rudy Carpenter will finally be brought to justice and how Andrea’s growing personal struggles will affect her future with the department.

We’ll have to wait to find out! Tune in to Marshals on Sunday, November 1, to see what happens next.
