President Trump Becomes The First Sitting President To Attend A Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles faced off for Super Bowl LIX, held in New Orleans, Louisiana with President Trump in attendance.

For the first time ever, a sitting president attended the big game.

While President Trump didn’t necessarily root for a team, earlier this week, he did hint that he thought the Chiefs would win.

“I don’t want to say, but there’s a certain quarterback that seems to be a pretty good winner,” he said responding to a reporter asking him who he thought would win the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl Had Heightened Security

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi stated that they did “extensive planning” for the event to “ensure the safety of all attendees, players, and staff. Security measures have been further enhanced this year, given that this will be the first time a sitting President of the United States will attend the event.”

Fans attending the big game went through more security screenings and vetting before being able to enter the Caesars Superdome.

NFL Players React To The News That President Trump Would Be Watching The Game

When asked how he felt about Trump attending the game, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said, “It’s always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president, someone who’s in the top position in our country. That’s cool to hear that he’s seeing me play football and respects the game that I play.”

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had a similar reaction, saying, “It’s awesome. It’s a great honor. I think…no matter who the president is I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life, you know, and having the president there, you know, it’s the best country in the world, so it’s pretty cool.”

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was asked if there would be any “added pressure” knowing the president would be watching, to which he responded, “No, ma’am.”

Eagles offensive lineman Jordan Mailata was also asked about Trump’s attendance. He said, “That’s cool, but Donald is not on that field. That’s cool, but again that’s blocking out the noise. What am I going to do thinking about Donald Trump? How is that going to make me win the game?”

According to USA Today, Trump was on the field before the game started. Chris Jones, a defensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs, approached Trump to shake his hand.

ABC News 10 out of Albany reports that Trump also met with the honorary coin toss recipients before the game, including the family members of the victims killed in the attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day.

News 10 reports Trump chatted with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson before the game started.

Later, Trump appeared on the Jumbotron when Jon Batiste performed the National Anthem. Trump saluted as he listened to Batiste sing. The audience cheered loudly during the brief moment when Trump appeared on the screen.
