Randy’s Legacy Captured In A Single Song

Randy Travis had no idea how impactful of a song he crafted when he wrote “I Told You So.”

The song was originally included on a 1983 album under his stage name Randy Ray, but is better known as a single released off of his 1988 album Always & Forever.

“I Told You So” was a major hit for Travis, and topped the country charts in both the U.S. and Canada. After two decades passed, Travis found himself on the charts with “I Told You So” yet again, all thanks to Carrie Underwood.

Old Song Gains New Life

Underwood recorded her own rendition of “I Told You So” for her sophomore album, 2007’s Carnival Ride.

She first released her version as a single February 2009, then recorded it and released it in March as a duet with Travis.

The duet version of the song made its way to the second spot on the Hot Country Songs chart. It was also a major crossover success, as it claimed the ninth spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fans and critics alike were absolutely enchanted by Underwood and Travis’ performance together. Their efforts were rewarded in 2010, when the two were named the recipients of the Best Country Collaboration with Vocals award at the Grammys.

The award held a great deal of meaning for both artists, especially Underwood. As she explained prior to a performance of the song at the Grand Ole Opry, “I Told You So” has always been one of her favorite songs.

It was a song that I loved so much by a person that I love so much,” she said. “His name’s Randy Travis, and this song was pretty big for him, and I’m so glad he let me sing it.

A Meaningful Performance For Many Reasons

After that, Underwood moved into a brilliant rendition of “I Told You So.” We’re sure everyone in the audience had chills every time she hit one of the high notes.

Following her performance, Underwood got the surprise of a lifetime when Travis strolled out on stage to compliment her. “I was going to do that song tonight,” he said with a smile, going on to add, “after hearing that, no way.”

After dishing out more praise, Travis asked Underwood the question that all country artists dream of hearing…”would you like to be the next member [of the Grand Ole Opry?]” Of course Underwood said yes!

Tune in below to watch Underwood’s heart-stirring performance of “I Told You So” and Travis’ surprise. You can tell that he was so proud of her!
