Tim McGraw & Faith Hill Are A Country Music Power Couple – Here’s Their Love Story

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill married on October 6, 1996. When speaking with ET Canada ahead of their 27th anniversary in 2023, Tim was asked what the “key” is to their long-lasting relationship.

Tim said there isn’t an exact “key” to what makes their marriage work. But he did speak about a “commitment” they made in their early days together.

We just made a commitment early on, when we first decided we were getting married and having kids, that we wouldn’t just walk out the door when problems arose.

Learn About Tim & Faith’s Decades-Long Love Story

Tim and Faith got to know each other while performing on the Spontaneous Combustion Tour in early 1996. A romance blossomed between them, and they started dating.

As Tim shared in a video on his and Faith’s 25th anniversary, he “asked her to marry [him] quite a few times and she kept saying no.” Faith was reluctant to marry another country singer, fearing the relationship wouldn’t work. She was previously married to publishing executive Daniel Hill, and their marriage ended in divorce in 1994.

But Tim didn’t give up. He proposed again when they were at a large outdoor music festival:

I’m getting ready to go onstage, and I had this sort of case that had this big mirror in it,” Tim recalled. “She’s standing there, and we’re talking, and I said, ‘Look, let’s get married.’ And she says, ‘You’re asking me to marry you at a country music festival in a trailer house…’ She goes, ‘Are you serious?’ And I said, ‘Well yeah, I’m serious.'”

Tim left to go onstage, believing Faith was not impressed with his proposal. But when he returned, he saw a message on his mirror:

I came off the stage and went back into my dressing room and Faith wasn’t there, but I looked at the mirror. In lipstick it said, ‘Yes! I’m gonna be your wife,’ And we still have that mirror. And it was the best day of my life, that’s for sure.”

They married on October 6, 1996. Their first daughter, Gracie, arrived a few months later.

Tim and Faith welcomed their eldest daughter, Gracie, on May 5, 1997. Their second daughter, Maggie, was born on August 12, 1998. Youngest daughter Audrey completed their family when she was born on December 6, 2001.

Despite their parents’ fame, the girls were raised mostly out of the spotlight. Tim and Faith protected their privacy while they were children, and rarely shared photos of them.

The girls are now adults, and all three are musically talented. Gracie recorded a duet with her dad called “Here Tonight,” and Audrey starred in his official music video for “7500 OBO.”

“We’ve raised three strong, independent, strong-minded young women,” Tim told PEOPLE in 2021. “And what I’m most grateful for is just how normal our kids are and how grounded they are and how much they respect themselves and other people. It makes me feel like we’ve done a pretty decent job, especially Mom.”

Tim dreams of recording a song with Faith and their daughters one day. “I’d love to do a song with all five of us at some point. I talk about it all the time,” Tim told Entertainment Tonight in 2023.

Tim McGraw & Faith Hill Have So Many Great Duets

Although Tim hasn’t recorded a song with all three of his daughters, he and Faith have released several duets. Their first was 1997’s “It’s Your Love.”

The song won a CMA Award, won four ACM Awards, and scored two Grammy nominations. It also reached the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart and the seventh spot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

Faith was pregnant with Gracie when the couple filmed their romantic music video for the song.

Many other duets followed “It’s Your Love.” Those songs include “Let’s Make Love,” “I Need You,” “Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me,” “Meanwhile Back at Mama’s,” and “Like We Never Loved at All.”

Tim and Faith released their first duets album, The Rest of Our Life, in 2017. The album reached the #1 spot on the Top Country Albums chart and the second spot on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.

The Rest of Our Life contains the two hit singles “Speak to a Girl” and “The Rest of Our Life.” Tim and Faith supported the album on their Soul2Soul World Tour, which kicked off in April 2017 and lasted through July 2018.

The Couple Also Starred In A Yellowstone Prequel

Tim and Faith’s most recent project together isn’t related to music at all. They played married couple James and Margaret Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel series 1883.

While Tim and Faith weren’t new to acting, they never starred in a project together before 1883. Their emotional performances were praised by viewers and critics alike.

Faith told The Hollywood Reporter she and Tim didn’t practice their lines together at home. They wanted to separate their real selves from their characters:

We’ve never done anything like this together,” she said. “Tim’s a legit actor, and I felt the only way to bring it as authentically as I possibly could was to experience James and Margaret for the first time on set. It would have been hard to separate the two for me. It seemed to work, because Tim still surprised me when we were working together — he did things as James I didn’t expect from him.”

Tim participated in the same interview, and said:

“My thought was: People are going to have a hard time overcoming seeing Tim and Faith onscreen. We wanted to shed as much of that baggage as we could. Inherently, our relationship and our chemistry and who we are together — it’s going to be there. But we wanted to keep it as real as possible for those characters.”

The chemistry was certainly there! But after nearly three decades together, that should come as no surprise…
