In the first episode of Marshals, we learn that Monica died after a battle with cancer. Following her death, Kayce picks up a badge and joins an elite team of U.S. Marshals. Monica’s legacy lives on through him and their son, Tate, who has grown up before our eyes.

Monica was one of the main characters in Yellowstone. So why was she (and therefore, Kelsey Asbille) written out of the story for Marshals?

The Hollywood Reporter claims Asbille “was unavailable” to film the spin-off series.

Spencer Hudnut, the creator of Marshals, told the publication that once he learned about Asbille’s inability to participate, Kayce’s motivation for joining the Marshals became crystal clear. In the wake of Monica’s death, Kayce would chase this new career path as a chance to find a new purpose in life.

Luke Grimes, the actor who plays Kayce, says he spoke to Asbille on the phone after he learned that Monica would die off-screen in Marshals. He told TV Insider:

We had a great conversation. In true Kelsey fashion, she handled it like a pro and totally understood. She’s going to do just fine. She is so talented, gorgeous, and awesome. She’s going to work. That’s not an issue.
