On this day in 2008, Carrie Underwood received an unexpected Grand Ole Opry invitation from the one and only Randy Travis.

Carrie took the stage at the Opry, captivating the audience with her rendition of Randy’s timeless 1987 hit “I Told You So.”

Introducing the song, she expressed:

“This next one that we’re going to do has always been one of my favorites growing up. It was a song that I loved so much by a person that I love so much. His name is Randy Travis. This song was pretty big for him and I’m so glad that he let me sing it.”

A Surprise Invitation

Just as Carrie wrapped up her performance, Randy made a surprise appearance to deliver the exciting news to Carrie that she would be inducted as a member. Carrie had barely finished her song when Randy came out behind her.

After Carrie noticed him, she laughed and teased the audience, saying, “I thought you guys were standing up for me!”

Following his praise for her stunning performance, expressing how “honored” he felt to have her singing his song, he then posed the exciting question.

“I was asked by the management here at the Grand Ole Opry to come out and ask you if you would like to be their next member.”

Carrie responded with a playful joke, saying, “Let me think about it…Yeah!”

During her performance on the Opry stage, Carrie Underwood was at the start of her career, having risen to fame after winning American Idol in 2005. She showcased her talent while making her mark in the country music scene.

In an interview with Billboard, Randy shared some significant praise for the former Idol winner.

“I don’t know how much of an influence I would be vocally on her. She’s so far beyond me that it’s ridiculous. She’s an incredible singer. If her range is six feet tall, mine would be about a foot. I can’t touch what she can do.”
