In the year prior to Carl’s death, Dolly gave fans a glimpse into their private life during an interview with E! News.
“To have someone there in your corner and you know they’ll love you for just who you are. Not what you do or what other people think you are. And they know you for who you are,” Dolly told the outlet in May. “There’s a great comfort in knowing that someone loves you exactly for who you are—because he fell in love with me before I became a star.”
She recalled that someone once asked Carl what it was like being married to a star. He replied, “I didn’t know I was.”
“To him, I’m his star, but he doesn’t relate to any of that,”she said. “He’s proud of me, but that’s not how he sees me, how the public sees me.”
