The First Installment In Kevin Costner’s Horizon Film Saga Debuted In Theaters On June 28
Box office numbers are in for Kevin Costner’s Horizon movie.
The first installment in Costner’s four-part epic Western series debuted in theaters on June 28. A second installment was slated to premiere on August 16, but those plans have changed. Costner is currently working on the third chapter of the series.
According to Variety, Costner invested $38 million in the project. Warner Bros. only paid for distribution, so the movie’s marketing expenses were borne by Costner himself. Variety reports the series’ budget was in the $100 million range.

Horizon received a warm response when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May. After its screening, the movie received a multi-minute standing ovation, prompting an emotional response from Costner.
“I’m sorry you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak,” Costner said. “Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me who continued to work. It’s a funny business, and I’m so glad I found it. There’s no place like here. I’ll never forget this — neither will my children.”

How Did Horizon Perform Over Its Opening Weekend?
After all of that, how did Horizon perform at the box office upon its release?
Unfortunately, Horizon only grossed $11 million over its opening weekend. The film was the third-highest-performing movie at the box office for the weekend, coming behind A Quiet Place: Day One and Inside Out 2.
Ahead of Horizon‘s release, Costner told Entertainment Weekly he wouldn’t dwell too much on Horizon‘s opening weekend numbers.
“I’ve lived with movies and what happens to them on their opening weekend,” he said. “If we put so much pressure on that, we’re bound to be disappointed. I’m really happy that ‘Horizon’ looks like what it’s supposed to look like, and that’s the way it’ll look the rest of its life. And that’s really important to me in this process.”

The former Yellowstone star continued:
“Would I love that it would be highly, highly successful? Of course, I’d like that. My ego would like that; everyone would like that. But I am happiest that the movie that you and I are talking about looks the way I want it to look.”
There’s no telling yet how Horizon‘s opening weekend results will affect the series moving forward.
Have you seen Horizon in theaters yet? What did you think of the film if so?
