Kevin Costner’s Western Film Horizon Earned Just $11 Million Over Its Opening Weekend In June

Horizon has been one of Kevin Costner’s biggest passions. The former Yellowstone star invested $38 million of his own money into the project, which he directs and stars in. Luke Wilson, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Costner’s own son, Hayes, are among some of Horizon‘s other stars.

Horizon is slated to be a four-part Western movie saga. The first chapter debuted in theaters on June 28. Its second installment is scheduled for release on August 16.

Variety reported that Horizon‘s first chapter earned just $11 million over its opening weekend. The film’s budget was reported by Variety as $100 million, though more recently, The Numbers listed it as $50 million.

During its opening weekend, Horizon came in third place at the box office behind A Quiet Place: Day One and Inside Out 2.

Costner’s Horizon Falls Out Of The Top 5 Films At The Box Office During Its Second Week In Theaters

Unfortunately for Costner, Horizon did not experience a rebound in its second week. According to The Numbers, the film only earned $5.4 million at the box office during its second Friday-Sunday run in theaters.

After its second week, Horizon also fell three spots to rank in sixth place at the box office.

As of Tuesday morning (July 9), The Numbers reports that Horizon has earned $22,072,313 at the domestic box office and $1,165,224 internationally, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $23,237,537.

Before Horizon’s first chapter debuted, Costner said he wouldn’t fret over the numbers. He told Entertainment Weekly:

“I’ve lived with movies and what happens to them on their opening weekend. If we put so much pressure on that, we’re bound to be disappointed. I’m really happy that ‘Horizon’ looks like what it’s supposed to look like, and that’s the way it’ll look the rest of its life. And that’s really important to me in this process.”

Horizon‘s second chapter is still set to debut in theaters on August 16. There has been no news about release dates for the saga’s third and fourth installments.
