Released in 2016, “I Forgive It All” was one of the last songs Petty recorded before he died in 2017 at the age of 66. The track reunited him with Mudcrutch, the Southern and country rock group he performed in during the early 1970s.
The group helped launch Petty to fame. He left in 1974 and formed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He returned to the band in 2007 and remained their lead vocalist until his death.
“I Forgive It All,” which Petty wrote, landed as the fifth track on Mudcrutch’s album Mudcrutch 2. Its music video was famously directed by Sean Penn and Samuel Bayer, and starred Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins.
