The Backstory Behind Jelly Roll’s New #1 Hit

Jelly Roll’s powerful single, “I Am Not Okay,” recently topped not one…but two charts.

“I Am Not Okay” debuted in June as the lead single from Jelly Roll’s new album, Beautifully Broken. The singer co-wrote the emotional track with Taylor Phillips, Ashley Gorley, and Casey Brown.

Fans immediately resonated with “I Am Not Okay.” The song shines a light on the topic of mental health.

As some of the lyrics go, “But God knows, I know, when it’s all said and done. I am not okay, but it’s all gonna be alright.”

The song received heightened attention when Beautifully Broken dropped on October 11. The album claimed the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, becoming Jelly Roll’s first #1 album.

It took just a few more weeks for “I Am Not Okay” to also reach chart-topping status.

“I Am Not Okay” Ascends To #1 Nearly Five Months After Its Release

Five months after its release, “I Am Not Okay” hit #1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. The song marks Jelly Roll’s sixth appearance at the chart’s top spot, with previous hits including “Chevrolet,” “Save Me,” “Need a Favor,” “Son of a Sinner,” and “Halfway to Hell.”

“I believe in the power that music has to connect with people, and being able to see the response out on the road touring and seeing and hearing from people about this song – it’s been unreal,” Jelly Roll told Billboard about “I Am Not Okay” and how it has resonated with listeners. He added, “…Thank you for continuing to shine a light on therapeutic music.”

CMT reports “I Am Not Okay” also reached the #1 spot on the Mediabase country chart.
