While getting sober and making positive changes for his future, Justin Moore found himself faced with the possibility of cancer.

During a recent visit to TL’s Road House podcast with Tracy Lawrence, the Arkansas native gave updates about his life and career, including the difficult decision to take a hiatus from performing to seek treatment for alcohol abuse.

In early June, the musician announced that he would temporarily step away from touring in order to focus on his health. One month later, Moore returned to the stage and revealed to fans that he had been in rehab and was now sober. He humbly shared:

“I just got out of rehab for 30 days, this is my 31st day sober, and I’m gonna try to help as many people from this point forward ’til my last days on earth, and hopefully set a much better example for my kiddos.”

Justin Moore’s Recent Health Scare Explained

The “Small Town USA” singer told Tracy Lawrence that he has faced some health concerns, but quickly clarified, “nothing life-threatening, thankfully.” He addressed the visible weight gain in his neck and joked:

“I’m sure people think, ‘Golly, he’s been eating good.'”

Initially, doctors were concerned that the mass might be cancer, but after testing, it was fortunately determined to be benign, or non-cancerous.

Moore learned that the growth is a lipoma, which is defined as “a slow-growing, fatty lump that most often is located between the skin and muscle layer but below the skin.” He recalled being advised against surgery by doctors:

“They said it would be very, very difficult to do surgery and it may affect my singing and even my speaking voice.”

In good spirits, he added:

“It’s weird, it doesn’t affect me. I just uh I just look like a linebacker, circa 1982, you know, thick neck.”

Perspective Shift Following Possible Cancer

As he was leaving the hospital following an MRI, Justin Moore admitted he was “bummed out” that nothing could be done to remedy the appearance of the lipoma. His wife of 19 years, Kate, told him bluntly:

“If you just have a fat neck and you’re here for the next 50 years, then shut up and stop complaining.”

Kate and Justin share four children together: three daughters and one son, between the ages of seven and 16. Accepting his condition, Moore joked:

“I’ve never sold records because of my looks in the first place.”

Since his debut in 2008, Justin Moore has released seven studio albums, two extended plays, and twenty singles. He had earned 10 number-one singles, three of which have been certified platinum by the RIAA.
