Network Responds To Report That ‘Yellowstone’ Is Ending This Summer
on Feb 06, 2023
Yellowstone could end with the season 5 finale, according to a new report.
Deadline reported Monday (February 6) that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Paramount Network are in discussions to end the show with its current season. The report also revealed that the partners are “plotting a potential franchise extension to continue the Dutton saga.” That extension is rumored to be coming in the form of a new show with one of Hollywood’s hottest actors in the lead role.
“It is unclear which of the Yellowstone cast will move over to the McConaughey-led series, but it is expected to include several of the big stars,” wrote Deadline.
The rumors come just a few weeks after Cole Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler on Yellowstone, told Entertainment Tonight that fans can count on two more seasons.
“I can tell you there will be a 6 and there will be a 7,” Hauser said. “That’s all I can tell you.”
But, if we know one thing it’s that plans can change…especially in the entertainment industry when schedules and other commitments collide.
Deadline reports that a scheduling conflict is the reason behind the potential abrupt end to Yellowstone.
The outlet wrote that sources told them that Yellowstone star Kevin Costner has been attempting to negotiate his shooting schedule. The actor is not only starring in the hit series, but is directing and starting in his own western called Horizon.
“Costner, who had originally limited himself to 65 days of shooting on Yellowstone, only wanted to shoot for 50 days for the first part of the current season,” Deadline claims. “But for the second batch of episodes of the current, fifth season of Yellowstone, the actor, who just won best television actor in a drama series at the Golden Globes, only wanted to spend a week shooting.”
Paramount Network reportedly declined Costner’s proposal and has decided to move forward with another spinoff. The network is rumored to be in talks with none other than Matthew McConaughey to star in the show.
Yellowstone is currently on a mid-season break, with the second half of season 5 scheduled to air this summer.

A spokesperson for Paramount Network issued a statement that neither confirmed or denied the rumors, leaving fans speculating about the future of the beloved show.
“We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner,” a Paramount Network spokesperson told Deadline.
