Nick Reiner, the son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner, made a brief but closely watched court appearance on April 29 as legal proceedings continue in the high-profile case surrounding the deaths of his parents.
The 32-year-old appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom facing two counts of first-degree murder tied to the December 2025 killings of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. Authorities allege the couple died from multiple stab wounds at their Brentwood home, a crime that shocked both Hollywood and the public.
During Wednesday’s hearing, Reiner appeared expressionless, dressed in a jail-issued outfit with a shaved head and goatee. He spoke minimally as he waived his right to a speedy preliminary hearing, saying, “Uh, yeah,” when asked if he agreed to that.
The next major step in the case is now scheduled for September 15.
The reason for the date not being for five more months is that there is two terabytes of data for prosecutors and public defenders to go through, and the autopsies have yet to be completed.
Reiner has previously pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bail following his arrest, which occurred roughly six hours after the bodies were discovered.
Despite his right to a speedy trial, the case has seen multiple scheduling delays since Reiner’s initial arrest in December. His arraignment was pushed into early 2026 before he formally entered a not guilty plea in February. This came after his original lawyer, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case in early January. He is now represented by a public defender.
Prosecutors have charged him with special circumstances, including multiple murders involving a weapon, which could make him eligible for life in prison without parole—or potentially the death penalty if pursued.
